RENEGADE vs EVO AIRBOX - HOMEMADE? WHICH WORKS BETTER?

Just a thought I had a new ZX9R in 96 & my mate had a new Blade & coming back to Cornwall from Donnington,he stopped me & said stop changing gears when you come to hills at about 120mph,I said Iwasnt changing gears between, service stations & my bike was restricted ,but had ram air & his didnt,he was dropping to 5th on the hills & was well pissed of & couldn't keep up,back to this argument I know my 9R was carburetted & dont know how it works with injection, but show me a performance model bike today without ramair?

its not so much what you gain from a sealed ram air system (only 3-4 bhp at max s) but what you don't loose, engineers found with open filter systems the faster the bike goes the less power the engine produces, one of the reasons is a low presure (partial vacuum) is formed around the widest part of the bike(tank) and the faster the speed the stronger this affect gets, the air presure sensor usually able to compensate either way, the problem is on a dyno its impossible to recreate the airflow at speed (unless you have a dyno in a wind tunnel -like suzuki , honda etc)

Another way to look at it is, the manufacturer's went to a lot of time and money to do what was best for the performance and this was a sealed unit with forced air taken from the front of the bike.

As majorjam say's, there is a void of low pressure and turbulence where you are trying to draw air from with an open filter set up, with a sealed unit you have a more constant pressure which rises a speed increases.

This debate has been going on for about 8 years now from what i remember:eatcorn

Just to chuck in my 10p worth.

Didn't the race bikes use an Evo type set up?? :roll

I just fitted an EVO to mine and although I have not been on a long ride out since fitting it I have noticed that the acceleration is a lot crisper.

Just need to get my hands on a Renegade set up now and see if that improves on the EVO set up. :devious

Huh...:confused i thought you were doing the Badger box mod :dunno

Hi Sprocker

I know, the badger mod looked well easy to do and sounds like it works a treat as well. Only reason I thought of turning to the DARK SIDE (RENEAGDE) was I am paranoid if I dont get a good seal something might pop through and into the stacks

Spoken to Hooked and he will have some results posted on his Renegade style in about a week, waiting to see how he goes 1st. :thumbup

Cheers Pete

Must admit i'm waiting for that thread too, sounds interesting :devious

I dont want kick all this off again, but do the same arguments apply to the Falco? Mine's got the factory race chip n cans but standard filter and airbox, and I have to say it feels every bit as lively as the old Tuono with Akra and Renegade Air, possibly the Tuono edges it low to mid revs but higher up its a close thing........... given that its works well already, how much improvement could I really expect? I'm assuming that the OE system has emissions related gubbins involved :dunno which prolly aint good news, but I'm amazed by how well its going.

The standard RenAir/Evo wont fit, right?

the falco uses the same airbox so all kits shold fit...i've got a hooked box...compared to a renegade these are very well made ..:thumbup

I agree and can also vouch personally for the 'HOOKED' Airbox conversion kit.:thumbup

:inlove mine still.

So the unanswered question ..................................

Does anybody actually have proof .............. Evo v's Renagade ( or hooked)

possibly some dyno graphs to go by :dunno:dunno

:pirate Wee Jimmie , I see that big lump ya did Almeria with has some interesting cornering stylee as does his norn iron motorcrossing mate

Thread from the dead!

Dyno's don't prove anything with mods like this, unless your wind tunnel testing you won't get the same affect, I personally think the sealed mod is the better of the too am i'm going to try that first, I was going to go for a open airbox style but i've heard even with a filter you get grid and dust going into your stacks.

iv never been a fan of the foam filters pods... had them on my Bandit 12... & swapped them for K&N cotton gaze ones... do K&N/BMC etc... do a version the same as the Hook foam filter !? :dunno
