Recovery Time

Well it's time for the recovery to start :clap
To give the full story (so far) I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the beginning of May. Luckily the cancer was totally confined to the prostate only. There is a range of possible treatments available and the choice is down to you, which was good to know, as I had done a load of research to work out which would be right for me. You only get the chance to make the right decision once.

I decided to opt for the following treatment : Robot assisted Laproscopic Radical Prostatectomy
Basically the surgeon uses the Da Vinci medical robot to assist with the complete operation, the Da Vinci machine is brilliant, so was the surgeon.
I went in to the Royal Hallamshire hospital at 10:30 on 5th October I went for surgery at 1:30 into the recovery room at 4:30 onto the Ward about 8ish (I think) after 1 night in hospital I was discharged at 7pm on 6th Oct
I have been home for nearly 3 days now, and I am starting to feel a bit more comfortable at last.

I think I've had my last run out on the bike for this year, but I can't wait for next spring to come along when I should be feeling better and able to enjoy the bike again.

That's good news mate the C word is enough to scare most people without having to think about how it can change your life as well,glad your on the mend,just out of interest what were your symptoms and catching it early helps I guess

My symptoms were urine retention and "urgency" in other words needed to go a lot (20+ times a day) up 4 or 5 times a night, but when you do go it's only like half a cupful and the rest is retained within the bladder which obviously reduces the time between wee's. A simple blood test is the starting point.......

From what I hear, prostate cancer, when localised and treated, has a v-high high success rate. Glad everything went well, and gets wishing you a fast recovery, and many more days on your T mate!

Between prostate and testicular cancer there are many many undiagnosed cases because us guys are too proud to get a finger up the hoop or have your baws checked.

You only get one life. Look after it.

Glad that you are on the mend and have many more biking years to look forward too

Many thanks to you all for the positive comments, I really appreciate it currently 6 days post op and starting to feel much more comfortable, really impressed with the way the tummy muscles are recovering, and I can honestly say that having your first poop for 6 days is a greatly underestimated joy.
I can now pretty well do everything for myself which helps with feeling human again, but I must say that my wife has been an absolute superstar,what an amazing woman she is.
I have had more sleep over the last 3ish days than in the last 3ish years cos I do not have to get up 5 times a night for a wee. As you can probably guess I am recovering even better than I expected, which is bloody great.
Once again, many thanks to all for your positive thoughts, I am so grateful.

Just a quick update on my current condition;
The district nurse removed the staples (25) this morning, so externally it's just straight forward healing of the scars - no problem. :thumbup

Tomorrow pm I get the catheter removed, that's one discomfort I'll be glad to see the back of I can tell you. After that it's all about regaining bladder control which is different for each person, it could takea couple of weeks, or many, many months, it's all about training the pelvic floor muscles, not something that is normal for blokes to use these muscles for bladder control.

I lost my dad to liver cancer in mid june this year . he had a year long battle with lung cancer , which obviously spread .

There were loads of blokes in various waiting rooms for radiotherapy ( called the 47 club ) 47 radio therapy visits ,( for prostate cancer ) . I took dad 6 times for r/t . didn't work tho .the tumor

started to grow again and had spread .

cancer is a real ******* and until someone you know or a close relative has it . you don't really understand what a life changer it is .
