Rear brake issue.......no RSV but Honda!!!

Evening all,

Once again i'm looking for some help!!! Basically, the rear brake on my blackbird seems to be "sticking" for some reason?? I noticed it when i was riding to work and came to a set of traffic lights, pulled the brakes, came to a stop, selected nuetral and sat up. I was on a relatively steep decline and so kept pressure on the rear brake. When the light were about to change, i selected gear and released the rear brake to move off but it never rolled an inch????

I took the rear wheel off last night, removd the pads and caliper and cleaned, greased and worked the pistons. All 3 moving freely??? I also greased the "sliders" that join the caliper to bracket but did notice that the rubber boot/grommet that the slider enters seemed to "grab" for want of a better word???? Is this normal???

I'm new to the linked brakes and wondered where i should be checking next to get to the bottom of it as i use it every day!!! Any help, much appreciated again guys.

Thanks...........................:thumbup

My mates BB does it all the time, coz its got linked brakes you need to check the front calipers too as any pressure in the front also applies the rear.
You can get them unlinked for about 150 squids......................

Cheers Scott, yeah i had heard that but don't want to/ can't stretch to going that route at the moment!!

I've checked the front wheel immediately after stopping when the brakes stick and the front spins freely but the back is almost solid???? I'll eventually get them de-linked but really just need to fix the b*stards at the moment!!!

Japanese reliability eh!!!!:biggrin:biggrin

Just checked with my mate, its his right front caliper that causes the problem and yes his front wheel spins free, also it could be the proportioning valve has got some crud in it and holding the pressure.

Just been out to check it now and it could very well be the secondary master cylinder which is attached to the left fork leg!! The actuatr looks "grimy" to say the least so will remove, free up and regrease that tomorrow and see if that helps!!

Do you know Scott, does secondary master cyinder actuate when the caliper is forced upwards slightly when applied, due to the motion of the disc's rotation?? It looks like that to me???? but that would be a tiny amount of movement????

I think so, pretty sure thats how it works.......................Unfortunately mates bike is at NSY so cannot check.

No worries bud, think that seems the only logical way for it to work so will try it anyway!!

Thanks again buddy, top man.............:thumbup

Andi, just make sure all mechanical parts are clean and free, when your down newcastle take a look at mine, the linked brakes take sometime to get used to,and remember when you use back brake it also applys pressure to front brakes.
See ya when ya down here gettin forks done

Cheers Bill, i'm gonna strip the secondary master cylinder tonight and give it a clean and grease and see if that helps!!

See you soon bud.:thumbup

A quick update and some more advice needed if anyone has any experience with these machines???!!!

OK, so last night i had a look at the secondary M/C and the workings of it and have a few questions.....

1 - I have been advised to make sure the pivot bolt is lubricated, is this the bolt that secures the M/C to the caliper or is it the bolt that attaches the caliper bracket to the fork leg????

2 - How much movement should there be in the M/C's pushrod (that actually activates the rear)? It seems as though there is very little movement BUT is that all it takes???

3 - The problem definately appears to be this area as when (as advised by someone on the blackbird site) when i hold the front brake lever and "pull" the bike back with the brake applied, it completely releases the rear caliper.... which is good as i know now it is actually that!!

4 - Lastly (promise!!) i'm nightshift tonight again so if we get some down time i'm planning on removing it and sorting it all out. My question is, to remove it do i have to empty the brake system completely (both reservoirs)??? Also, i dont have a rebuild kit (will order one asap) but can the original boot etc.... be reused once cleaned and lubed???

Thanks very much for any help again and sorry for the long winded questions!!!

I realise it's probably not the right place for this question and MODS if it needs removed, please do so.........just know there are a few handy guys on here who may be able to help!!
