Rear brake died!

Hi All :thumbup

Forum newbie here! I have a 2004 RSV-R.

I've got a problem with my rear brake which has completely stopped working. I took it to a bike shop and the mechanic inspected the rear brake caliper, which was fine and the pads have plenty left on them. His diagnosis was that I need to replace the rear master cylinder.

Two questions:

1. Can anyone offer some good advice or tips on replacing the cylinder and bleeding the system?

2. Does anyone have a cylinder for sale? If so, what is the price?

Cheers,

Si.

Lots of people have a problem with this (Difficulty Bleeding back brake) I am sure there are threads on here which deal with the bleeding of the rear brake. Search the threads. I had to force fluid thro mine with a syringe, never had a problem since.

See common Mods, few posts in there, Posh Jonny has one which is good.

Hi Ken,

Many thanks for your advice. I'll take a look at the mods.

Cheers,

Si.

Your OK buddy Hope you get on With it. and welcome to the Zone you wont go far wrong on here, Nice avatar

you need to take the caliper off & raise it before bleeding(above the height of the reservoir)
should be ok for at least 2 tho miles.......& then repeat forever & ever & ever....lol
good luck & welcome

Aye just as the man above says(hows it going Shane m8)bleed bleed and more bleed also try changing the fluid for .5 race fluid it doesny boil as low as the normal stuff and tell the guy at the garage to **** off maybe say it a wee bit nicer than that tho the prob is the rear brake thingy is to near the exhaust and the heat plays havoc on later models aprilia fitted a heat shield, i know a few people have fitted different rear sets that move the cylinder and it has cured the problem check out aprilia performance they have there own rearsets that are super sexy and these move the cylinder oot the way, hope this helps.......

Howzit going buddy, have you got the new beast on track yet? I'll bet it sticks like the sh*t to a blanket
all good this end m8, hoping to get one more in before fookin cold comes, put a proper slipper clutch on
now, wicked, transformes it on track, laters

Thanks Shazam & Bryan for your feedback on this. I'll add it to my ever-growing list of things to sort out on my Aprilia!

best bet is relocation of the master cylinder, ive done this and 18 months on i still have a perfect back brake. (money well spent) The cheap option (£5) is the heat shield though i hear its not that effective.

Best bleed is the reverse bleed method.

Good luck

Cheers Custom. I'm going to look to buy a replacement master cylinder and will give it a go.

Buy a set of cheap plastic syringes off ebay, they do wonders for bleeding hydraulics!
As for the heat shield, i reckon it makes a bit of difference as i havent had to bleed the back brake once since fitting it...

Even with syringes though its really important to raise the caliper up nice and high like the others mentioned, preferably with the bleed valve at the highest point

Consider that buying a new master cylinder will mean you have even more bleeding bubbles out before it works...

Hey fella, I'm new to this site myself ... it's a wealth of knowledge !!!

Re your rear brake issue, I have a similar problem ... however, to overcome this I use thick soled boots ... Bit tricky on Emergency Stops though.

Best of luck with the Cyclinder overhaul/replacement and fluid change.

i have a perfect rear brake :doug:doug:doug:doug
rear masters well away from engine fitted on
to my sexy rearsets :nana:nana:nana:nana
welcome mate go for the rearsets mod ,also not sure about
the dot 5 fluid though :dunno:thatsgay
enjoy your bike mate :bigok:wheelie:wheelie:wheelie:beer2

Wots wrong wi the dot 5:dowhat and i wish you never found they cartoon thingys every post fae you now looks like an episode of tom and jerry:devious lol oh and the dot 5 has a higher boiling point or won't boil can't mind which but its way better than dot 4:thumbup:biggrin:bitchslap:eek:see wot i mean!!!!

im sure i read it somewhere not to use dot 5 with the aprilias dot 4 only:dunno:pirate

i remember when lookin at what fluids to buy was a bunch of scaremongers saying your engine will explode if you mix dot 4 and dot 5.. i later found out that dot 5 is expensive and most the stuff you will find is actually dot5.1 which CAN be mixed safely (something to do with being silicon based mumbo jumbo that stops 4 & 5 meshing.. but 5.1 is similar to 4)

in the end i concluded that nobody can actually tell the difference anyway (except maybe for the track bike racers who are a bit obsessive about every little detail..)

TL;DR - dont mix 5 and 4 but 5.1 is different matter, confused much?

I just dont use my back brake!!! it dont work, hasn't worked since i bought it, will bleed it b4 MOT, the engine and fronts do the work for ya........

you obviously dont ride in towns or cities much, the back brake is a godsend for all that crappy rush hour traffic (on account of the bike stalling under 15mph if you dont **** the clutch..)

for riding the twisties though its definately useless, even when it is working properly
