So what's the best way to protect the sprag? I've read about the problems, so have a new battery and optimiser. I don't touch the throttle when cold, (just choke), and it fires up fine. It's just kicked back on me when semi-warm though. Is it best to use a bit of choke if in doubt and leave the throttle alone?

Also what happens if the sprag goes, does it just fail to grip or make a noise?

From what ive read in the past it makes a terrible noise. Put it this way you would know something is wrong.

With regards to protecting it youve done the right thing and just dont touch the throttle when first starting.

Thanks. Strange how the manual tells you to use throttle. It did make a horrible clang earlier today when it kicked back, but doesn't seem any worse for it. I'm new to RSVs and not used to their quirks yet. Went for a run this afternoon and stopped halfway. The temp dropped to about 45C so I tried a little choke to restart and it appeared to like it. Certainly better than my "Clang" episode earlier

The choke isn't a choke as such it's a cold start lever and all it does is open the throttle butterflies a little. If she like's a little tweak on the cold start lever when only slightly warm then fine.

It's repeated attempts to start the bike with a low battery and lots of throttle that kills the sprag clutches when the engine decides not to fire and kick back
