You would think that Kawasaki’s announcement to leave MotoGP put’s to rest whether or not they will be racing next year in MotoGP, but you’d be wrong….at least sort of wrong. There has been a tremendous amount of speculation if someone else would come along and direct/finance a Kawi MotoGP effort, and many people have pointed that finger at Jorge “Aspar” Martinez. That rumor would appear to have gained new credence today with the latest comment from Dorna’s CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, continuing reading for more.

Martinez has not been shy about confirming the fact that he has been in talks with Ezpeleta about coming into MotoGP, but this is the first time we’ve heard a reciprocation from the other side of the fence about the issue.

Ezpeleta was quoted as saying, first of all, I would like to clarify the fact that what Kawasaki has suspended its MotoGP racing activities through its factory team…Under these circumstances we agreed to cooperate collectively, in order to find a possible solution to their problems which may allow them to continue as a privateer team.”

If Jorge Martinez is the director of that privateer team, it raises some serious questions as to who will be piloting his bikes. The*Spaniard*has made it clear that he would like to field a team that had at least one Spanish rider. In case you didn’t know, Marco Melandri is Italian and John Hopkins is American. Who could be that Spanish ride, and could one of the GP*veterans*have the other seat? It’s anybody’s guess at this point, but this has got to be one of the more exciting off-seasons to happen in MotoGP since the switch to the 990cc four-stroke motors.
