hey guys,

need some help and im might just be being a women here but been out on the bike and lets say im accelerating from 30mph or so in 4th gear, like i car you get the judder, but when revs are picking up there is a noise like the rods are about to come through the engine :laugh

is this normal:dunno

not used to this V-twin malarky yet, still used to the inline4 still.

bike had only done 12,500 miles in its 11 years life surely nothing can be wrong.:confused

Don't suppose you could record the sound some way and post it here?

It's really hard to diagnose a noise from a description.

PS. Have you done the basics and checked your chain tension, sprockets are tight etc....?

ye everything is tight as a badgers ***

cant get sound recording as its on progression of speed.

the bike itself ticks over no problem, after doing 20miles in 6th it comes down nicely to tick over....bike accelerates no problems.

Like i say it feels and sounds like a rod is going to come through the engine as you accelerate.

its like in a diesel car when your in the wrong gear it chugs...well the sound is similar.

Hang on......30mph in 4th gear...that's asking a little much of the bike...it's bogging down...The bike will pull from 3k revs no problem (especially with the gearing adjusted - sprockets changed) but 4th gear is my usual twisty roads between 60-90mph gear!!! Try dropping a gear or two!

yeah tend to agree 30mph is more like 2nd gear 3rd at a push, hope thats all it turns out to be for ya....:thumbup

suppose the sound is hard to tell.

i have a feeling its just the thump of the v-twin just sounds tapety thats the best word to describe it :D

but i think it will be fine. going in for a service with thingy off here ;)

yes i agree, 30 mph in 3rd gear is probably asking to much of the bike. Thats more like a second gear speed at the most.

Hope its nothing serious :thumbup

anyway back on topic.

whats the tapety noise on acceleration lol. only lasts for 2 seconds.

Sounds like the normal V Twin gulping air on acceleration and the tapping is most likely to be your injectors chucking fuel in to the throttle bodies to meet your throttle positioning demands.

Don't labour the engine, I try to keep the revs around the 2200 - 3200rpm when pottering around. You let the revs get lower than 1500rpm and the instant you demand power in the wrong gear the bike suffers from horrendous noises such as what you described.

I'd say the sound is chattering on the sprockets,as you're in too low a gear.

'Chattering of the sprockets' You appear to have hit the proverbial nail on the head there Al.

Technical past I suspect or many years of tinkering??

im off to harrogate tomorrow ill try different things..... i might just be accelerating to quickly aswell is the other one.

I KNEW MY APRILIA MISTRUST FROM THE RS125 AND 250 WOULD COME BACK AND HAUNT ME :laugh
