Hi all,

Got a few questions on my 2004 RSV-R...

OK, I didnt really do any research before buying my 2004 RSV-R. Saw it in a showroom window and was suddenly £5k lighter. Absolutely love it.

1) Are my exhausts the standard ones? They do have Aprilia Racing written on them but they're pretty quiet at tickover but do sound good once on the move. They also pop a little on throttle roll-off so I was wondering if the baffles are on their way out anyway? Any ideas?

2) I'm thinking about getting some new cans, probably Akrapovic. I've read you can remove the baffles on various exhausts? Is this straight forward? Can I re-insert them come Mot time? Do I need to?

3) I'm guessing I'll also need to fit a chip or power comander? How much would this cost? My low speed throttle action is a bit snatchy anyway, is this usual? What is 'Map 2'?

Sorry for all the questions guys but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there mate, I was in a similar position not so long ago...quite happily screaming about on an inline4 and suddenly the World went all grunty!!

The exhaust you've got are standard, the popping might be that the bike's already been re-mapped ( mine has standard cans and is on map 2 and it pops a bit on roll off too, however other owners say this is true on standard mapping also)
Most new aftermarket cans have removable baffles which are either removed by undoing a small nut or in some cases grinding a rivett out to enable to remove the baffle, which can then be re-inserted for MOT's etc...
You will need to get the ignition changed to 'map 2' which is the sports mode for race cans/filters etc.. This should be done at a garage with the appropriate kit - most v-twin dealers appear to have access to this service, I'm not sure of the cost but a bit of local research should reveal the answer!

The bike doesn't necessarily need these mods BUT will ride better (so i'm told!) and will certainly sound like a v-twin should!!
All the best

Mate get a set of Arrow's for it they come with removable baffles adn OH MY GOD they sound great, change the front sprocket to 15 easier in traffic and pops up nice and the re-mapping takes 10 minutes.

If you want it all sorted for a very good price with some great and i mean great advice take it to Southern Cross at Kilburn NW London, worth the ride what Don and Andy do not know is not worth knowing. I have there number if you want it and i do not work on a commission basis, as i am sure most guys on the site who have been there will back me up they are tops.

Hope you get it all sorted

Hi, thanks for the info chaps.

Been a V-twin convert for a while now, have had a Duke 996 and Suzuki TL-S previously.

Regarding the mapping, is there an easy way to see if its already running 'map 2'? I dont want to get ripped off changing it if it's already done.

There's an Aprilia dealer just up the road (In Moto) but I dont know what they're like. May take a blast up to Kilburn first. Will have a look at the Arrow cans too.

Once again, thanks.

Mate use Southern Cross never heard anyone slating them or getting ripped off.:thumbup They do excellent work at a very good price.:thumbup

I purchased the renegade carbon air box:biggrin had it fitted also a new throttle cable all £205,:biggrin i nearly feel over but definatly worth a trip then call into Ace Cafe on the North Circular for a bite to eat:eatcorn:eatcorn

They do pop on standard cans and Map 1 as the bike runs very lean. Don't use Map 2 with stock cans as it is an open loop system (Lambda probe bypassed) and will burn out the cats in the stock cans.
When adding race cans, make sure it is set to Map 2 and the CO levels reset ASAP - No PC3 needed. You can only find out what map is loaded by the dealer using the AXONE tool.
Poor running at low speeds is often caused by badly set CO levels.

Southern Cross are your best bet - Top quality, very friendly and reasonably priced. I make a 170 mile round trip to go there....

Best cans - Buy a set of Tigcraft race.......

Thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated.

Hopefully catch up with some of you on a ride out at some point.

DC :cheers
