Based on the streetbike version, this 1953 Matchless G45 was an “over-the-counter” race bike that was made available to select British racers. It has a 500cc parallel twin motor from a G9, and in the right hands, was quite successful at winning national races.
In 1958, it was superseded by an enlarged version of the 250cc AJS 7R, and tagged as the Matchless G50. The G50 was a single-cylinder machine that was lighter and more reliable than the G45, but according to its owner, didn’t have anything on the G45 in the looks department. We couldn’t agree more.
