Part worn tyres - always a hot topic

quick question to those who would never use part worn tyres...when you buy a used car or bike do you change the tyres as the ones on it are part worm??

fine for the track NOT for the road
i understand everyone has an opinion and i agree in principal with most but i am struggling with this one mate :no i would have thought the integrity of tyres would need to be 100% for use on the track more than the road due to the increases in :
average speed / mile
acceleration
braking
corner entry speed
corner exit speed
lean angle
lower tyer pressures
IMHO all of the above place tyres under a greater load and more prolonged stress than most ride outs :yes

just want to put a different spin on things as a few people have mentioned the risk in part worns :yes
so my question is who would fit used suspension on their bike be it front, rear or a damper ? :dunno

I put a second hand shock on the back of my last T, set it up for me and didn't have any problem with it, I left it on when I sold the bike.
Regarding replacing tyres on a second hand bike / car, no I wouldn't unless there was an obvious fault with the tyres, but I wouldn't buy part worn tyres for my bike,
I do know a man that can get part worn car tyres from where he works, not tried 'em though. :no

Surely the whole thing boils down to what your happy with putting on yer machine, some might be happy with part worn and some not.

Mr b, I would definitely agree with your comments on track tyres. The loadings they're subjected to are far greater than those under normal road use.

As for second hand shocks and forks I would have thought that if they had been used to their working limits or beyond they would feel totally shagged when you used them.

It's not often or at all that you hear of shocks or forks failing catastrophically ie snapping.

Aye mucker, thing is you don't get any warning they're about to let go. :eek

I bought a pair of part worn tyres for 1 of the daughters cars recently. The garage tells me a lot are from cars written off and are fine. He checks them first before fitting & let me have a butchers too, Could be a lot of worn bike tyres come in the same way?
Defo agree with you Brooksy about using them on a track. Mate of mine's brother in law uses new ones for a meeting then gives them to my mate. He's happy enough with that. Makes sense to me, bearing in mind your points.

I watched what I assume was an old 5th gear today and they had a car tyre test on it.
1. Top brand £330
2. Budget Polish £200
3. Part worn but 4 different manufacturers + two of them were winter tyres and one had a cut and bulge on the side wall.

Speed into and round a corner.
1. 70mph
2. 66mph
3. 61mph

Quick lane change.
1. Not bad.
2. A bit worse.
3. Fookin scary.

Stopping in wet slippery conditions from 40mph.
1. The longest.
2. 7.1M less.
3. 12.1 M less than 1

The car was a Megane with all it's lecy toys switched on.

I know they're car tyres but for me there's no substitute for "You get what you pay for".

Unless yer need tae stop on a ****** surface. :eek
