Hey folks, not been on here for a while so hello to all the newer members from an old Somerset Zoner:thumbup

Bike was on paddock stand in garage with no rear wheel and I tried to start it. The solenoid stuck and she never fired up but turned over and over until the batt went dead filling the garage with burned plastic type smoke etc and I couldnt push the bike outside coz it was on the paddock stand with no rear wheel doh:eek: Now it was on an optimate and has only done a few hundred miles on the new solenoid (Yam upgrade) So I was wandering if to avoid me burning down my garage in future and to give me some peace of mind I might fit a kill switch on the battery cable to the solenoid. Has anyone done this here and / or would you advise it?:dunno

Cheers, Tim:thumbup

No reason not to, if thats what you want to do. Are you thinking it will happen again then ?:dunno

Hey Sab, how are yer?
Mate, any extra switches/connections in the RSV's rat's nest of wiring are just another thing waiting to go wrong.
I suggest getting a set of Mark's quick release seat pins so if it happens again you can whip the seat off quick - keep a philips in the seat hump and you can have the battery off in a few seconds.

Cheers for the quick replies guys:thumbup

Ken, I am not expecting it to happen again as I am putting the fault down to the bike being A) very cold (It was well below freezing that night) and B) the bike had not been rode or even started in a little while.

The cold can obviously affect the bike wanting to start but the solenoid is a bit more of a concern as I replaced it fairly recently.

The reason for me wanting to put the kill switch in is because it was a bloody horrible experience thinking the whole lot might go up in flames and I couldn't disconnect the solenoid without getting an allen key to get the seat off etc. and then disconnect the batt:eatcorn

Maybe I am just a worrier as I did fit a switched bypass to the thermoswitch on my rad fans coz I dont like seeing the temp get as high as the thermoswitch will allow!

The pins are a bit gucci so I will get me some anywayz just for being a tart:dunno and they will save me from scratching around for allen keys in emergencies, but I cant help thinking a proper solid kill switch would mean "If it all goes **** up I can stop it all with the flick of a switch"!! If I do go down that road I could do with some advice on the right switch:dunno Those battery / solenoid cables are big ole buggers.:devious
This is purely for me btw, as I said before I am a paranoid ******! and anyone reading this with no solenoid problems should ignore it!

What kind of damage has it done to the wiring loom?

It could be that a batch of Yamaha solenoids are duff, try to find your receipt and make a claim if it is confirmed that the solenoid was at fault?

Hi Tim, if you need any help with anything give me a shout.

I have a brand new spare solenoid (albeit a cheap one) in the garage if its any use?

My solenoid looked original being a 50amp,and I was for upgrading to a Yamaha one ,then having read of the two incidents reported on here decided not too.
I purchased an Hitachi model 150amp for £25 from Rocket Bikes
