Sold the Mille & bought a Tuono, the moding starts
As a new owner of a 2002 RSV Mille i have been reading through info on this site for 2 weeks now, & must be honest as i am not at all mechanically minded ive started to worry a bit about the ever growing mods list ive been taking note of. Have to say though the excellent advise on Threads like 'Brown Plug in good nick shall i cut it out?' are making me feel better. Anyway heres my mods list so far, seriously do all of these NEED done?

1/ Wemoto Starter Solenoid.
2/ Motobatt MBTX12U Battery.
3/ Set of Earth Straps.
4/ Brown Connector & other wiring mods.
5/ Side Stand mod.
6/ 16 T Front & 43 T Rear Sprockets.
7/ Michelin 2CTs.
8/ Clutch Master mods.
9/ Jet mod 40.
10/ Sprag Clutch.

If any of You have any better suggestions for any of the mods please let me know before i start buying bits.
Thanks.

No you don't need to do them all, it depends on the condition of the bike, how well it's been maintained & if it's used in all weathers. I have a 2003 RSVR & I've just been through Steves winter mod list on mine.

1. Definately yes
2. Uprate battery to a 14 definately yes
3. I cleaned up all my terminals & earth points & it's fine.
4. No corrosion or over heating on mine so it's fine.
5. Always worked fine so left it alone, easy to sort out on the road if it ever goes wrong.
6. I run 16/42
7. Just fitted a new pair of Pirelli rosso II
8. I just stripped & cleaned the standard clutch slave, works great & is light even with shorty levers unless you have weak girly hands.
10. Sprags never given any trouble but I keep mine on an Optimate so it starts easy.

You may want to check your head race bearings, mine were notchy after 10K, bottom one goes first. I replaced mine with taper bearings

1. not needed unless you have starting problems
2. ytx14bs is better
3. wtf is that?
4. yes if you got the brown connector melt
5. not needed
6. recomended 16/44
7. ok
8. not needed
9. not needed
10. not needed unless experiencing issues

you do not mention what setup you have

If your happy with your bike these mods can be done over a period of gradually..........don't think just because you got the bike and its got standard bits on it its not useable........ a lot of the mods are to prevent failiures or improve existing hardware............best thing is to get out and ride not spend all your worrying about it:thumbup

Thanks for the quick replys Guys much appreciated:thumbup

Its got a VTX12-BS in it at the moment so got a Optimiser & hooked it up today. Will buy the new Battery closer to spring when i start using the bike on a more regular basis. My question is- if the VTX14-BS is the Battery to go for is it worth paying the extra Money for the' FIXED GEL' Battery or just buy the Battery & Acid Pack?

over the next few weeks i'll fit the Wemoto Solenoid & strip the Fairings off & check all Electrical Connections etc. Gonna stick with the 16-43 Sprockets as i plan to do a few 'long weekend' tours around north west scotland this year.

I'll need to get a mate to help me with the head race bearings & Electrical work as im useless but will learn as i go!!

As my old engineer dad use to say " if it aint broke dont fix it !!! "

Eddie

I think the must do's are def battery and solenoid . I'd guess the ecu wire and the airbox mod have been done , I'll be changeing my gearing soon to 16/44 which seems the most popular combo . Im off up the west coast begining of june with a couple of mates heading up to the Orkneys and then back home , If your on one of your ride out you could tag along for the ride up to the A87 .

Sounds good Floakey, let me know closer to the time when your passing.

Im not sure if the ecu & airbox mod have been done, i found your original thread on it earlier so will get out & check.

So am i making a mistake buying the 43 Tooth Rear Sprocket then? As you say the 44 does seem most popular!

Depends if you want it to run like a Jap in line 4 you will always be changing gears. I run 16/42 better acceleration than standard but you don't have to keep changing gears or maybe I'm just lazy :biggrin

Just buy a 15 tooth and keep the 42 rear (standard), unless the rear is shot.

If ya wanna know the roads to ride up north have a look here mate, i took these in 2005 on a wee trip i did on my own

I just didnt want to make the already short gearing shorter, and extra upshift between corners means an extra down shift into corners which can just result in slower progress I find.

Satchel man. Relax buddy, I`v done all the leg work for you, I`m running a thread at the mo with all the mods worth doing.
When I first got the mille I was overwhelmed by all the mod talk, which is why I made the winters mods list (which I will be constantly updating.
The thing is the same mods are sometimes refered to differently which can get confusing.

Some mods are consolidate what you have and some are tried and tested ways to unlock some hidden potential and improve what you have.

Rather than just doing everything, read through my winter mods thread (its not just for winter lol, its just a good time to work through it so you arent missing sunny riding days while its ion the garage!), I`v already asked all the questions why the mods are needed (or not) and what they do.

I am actually just updateing the list and ordered it in a way that makes it a bit less confusing for the new mille owner, I hope ( only got mine last september! )
Welcome by the way! Heres a link to the list thread make a cuppa and have a read :thumbup ..

Excellent Steve thanks.

Stripped off the Tail Unit earlier & the Brown Connector is in good condition with no signs of heat damage. Have ordered a new Solenoid from Ebay & organised to borrow a Soldering Iron, Heatwrap & Connectors etc from a mechanic mate of mine on wednesday. On further inspection it appears the previous owner has made a complete arse or wiring up the aftermarket indicators, so will tidy that up while im at it.

As a mechanical gimp it feels good to be getting stuck in about it, Lol :)

Satchelman

Your welcome fella, if you have a look at thread now you`ll see I`v just posted up a handy summary, and I will be adding page reference numbers to save the people time, when I get some myself!
The wiring mod really works, I`m so impressed with the improvement. Airbox next for me ;)

I live not that far from you down in Newton Stewart, good roads down here too.

Me & a mate had a day out to scotland a couple of years ago, set off from morecambe, motorway up to Glasgow (just to get up north) then followed the A82 all the way to Inverness, then on to A9 back down to Perth, jumped on the M90 to get though Edinburgh, then down the scenic route, A7 to Carlisle, finaly A6 back to home. 720 miles in a day, set off at 8 am back home at 10 pm :thumbup
