Old vs New. Help me choose

A

Hello all.

I've had my eye on an RSV in a local dealer on an '03 plate, 4300 miles and up for £3495. I probably would of had it already if the weather had allowed a test ride but it hasn't so in the mean time I've been window shopping on the web for RSV's.

The thing is I'm seeing some of the new shape bikes on '04 plates going for less than £4k with lowish milages which seems like a seriously lot of bike for the cash, and makes the '03 look a bit pricey.

I had a sit on an '05 bike in a dealers and thought it was pretty uncomfy but once you got a foot up on the pegs it didn't seem so bad. It was the fact the older bikes seemed comfyier that atracted me to them.

So now I'm not so sure what to go for and would like a bit of feedback regarding the ownership of the two diferent models.

The comparisons I'm interested in, in no particular order are:

RUNNING COSTS
insurance
servicing
replacement parts

COMFORT
over long distance
round town
touring ability / fixing luggage

EASE OF OWNERSHIP
one better suited to road riding
build quality for year round riding
availability of parts
reliability

Any help from people who've experiance with both bikes would be great thanks :confused

RUNNING COSTS
insurance, where I live the same :D
servicing, the same
replacement parts, the same

COMFORT
over long distance, better on the old model
round town, better with the old model, but both are quite bad in this category
touring ability / fixing luggage, i would say the same, but both are not realy meant for touring

EASE OF OWNERSHIP
one better suited to road riding, old
build quality for year round riding, both
availability of parts, both
reliability, both

TRACKDAYS

Hi there, looking at your previos bike the zzr600,I would have said the early shape would be more suited,,the newer shape is a more focused rideing position, also the 04 were renowned for the milometer reseting to zero,so have they actually got low milaege? Im biased because I own an early shape, but price wise, mine was 3200 for an 03 Rmodel with 10k but no service history, weather is picking up so get a test ride & then offer £2900,they arent selling a lot this time of year

Older base model insurance group 15, R model group 17. Newer model regardless of R or Factory insurance group 17 if I'm no mistaken.

I'm probably gonna get some stick for this. :)

Imho, the new models look too like a jap bike rather than Italian. Sorry guys!

I like the humpy, less angled big bike look of the older models.

I would not pay that ££ for a RSV, it would have to be a RSVR.

Older bikes apparently have a bit more grunt lower down. Good for roads.

Rgds

Got a very well sorted 2000 'R'
Tried a new Factory on a demo - by comparison it was a shed:puke
I know it was standard but it was a mile away from mine.
Yea I have a certain bias - but I think you know how I feel?

Am I asking for trouble? :confused

Cause your not used to either mate i would go for what you like the look of, you will sell a newer model easier later on you have proved that yourself by thinking about the 04 instead.

Personally i never used to like the mk1 but over the years they grew on me .prob not much in it go for what you like the look of.
The touring thing on an rsv is ok as long as your doing more than 60 mph all the time cause they are crap at low speeds and in town but you dont buy em for town do ya ;-).

Luggage is limited to ventura packs as far as i know ?.

Fantastic bikes great noise not ten a penny and on rails....

hhmmm thanks for replies.

Think i'm more likely to go for the older one on reflection, get one in decent nick while you still can!

Hope I can get the price down on the one at the dealers, tho I think a friend of a friend has one up for sale in red on an '02 for about £2700. I think its due its first major service tho which is a good few quid on top. Is £350-£400 about par for the service? I think thats about what i've seen quoted in a couple of RSV reviews

pm griff aka fusebox on here for service price he is the man on em .think he will surprise you .

Buy which shape you prefer the look of they're all great! Depends what your main usage will be (track, touring, etc) I test rode an 04 base model before buying my 00 mille r. More compact and squat down than the older model which i would favour on track, however for touring (planning a trip to spain in sept) i would much rather my own bike. Much roomier riding position and bigger on the back end for luggage. I'm not biased as i love em all and when the time comes to change i'll be looking for an 04 onward model. A lot of people love the mille for its roomy position, especially if your 6ft plus. I got on ok with the later one just fine as im only 5ft 8. Just test ride them all bud and see which feels best for you. Personally i would always opt for the r/factory model, I'm a sucker for those oz rims :biggrin :biggrin

Hey guys, or gays if you ride the 04> model ..........lol (just kiddin fellas) :devious

I ride a 99, the 04> is a much sharper tool is pretty much every aspect of the older version, its like they took the original model and had JAPAN do the mods to it (settle down)............................

Never came to terms with the 04>, but as a bike its merits are there in most ways, however still like the old shape.

Best model is the 03 when they went to the radial front brakes, pick up a nice one of those and then the 04> wont bother you at all.......

JUST DONT TEST RIDE AN 04>

Cheers Pete

Had both mate, wrong way round though...newer shape then older Mille. Much prefer older version due to engine characteristics; tonnes of grunt and engine braking, compared to the more revvier newer version...However they're all good, looks like you've done some research; a test ride on both would probably help make your mind up..have fun!
