Oily Airbox !

On a slightly more serious note,
Been fiddling with the bike, checking state of airfilter (pretty ****** as it appears to be the original) and noticed there was a bit of oil in the airbox....Now I'm sure it's not supposed to get in there...any ideas of the cause??!? Oh, and no I didn't pour it in there by accident:eatcorn

well.....not lots but enough that I needed some paper towelling to mop it up....I'm pretty sure the airbox has not been opened since the bike was sold...so after 5 years of use this could explain what I found!

the breather system is poor on these bikes with just a short rubber hose from cam cover so oil gets blown into airbox, then it does drain through slots in velocity stacks into tbs to be burnt, think its normal and probably why oil consumption sometimes seems quite high :)

aaahhh, another wonderful person soothing my concerns...cheers mate!

The standard airbox set up has a clear collector tube about 6" long on the right hand side that is plugged at the end of the tube.

My tube gets half full every 2000 - 3000 miles or so and the engine oil level has hardly dropped. (We are talking minute amounts of oil here, a couple of ml at the most)

I intend to pull off the complete airbox unit and clean it at least once a year, that is unless I replace it with one of those lovely Renegade copies. LOL

I wouldn't worry unless you can hear or see oil sloshing around in the airbox unit.

Id be a little concerned if my airbox hadnt been opened for 5 years. Your air filter must need slinging:pirate:dowhat

hi newboots, man if the oil is topped to the max when cold, when hot as it expands it overflows into the air box.

Cheers guys, for all the help, have checked the collector and it appears empty, I'll keep an eye on it...the old filter is binned & I'm awaiting a replacement in the post!

Hello Newboots I've got a bike the same as yours and i also had that problem but all it is is a small amount too much oil after being topped up and the damn thing blows it up into the air filter or it can also do it if you pull them wheelie things aswell so nothing to worry about.PS if you order yourself a new filter make sure it's not the one for the 98-00 they don't fit it's best to get one for the 01-03 model hope that helps.
