Oil light stays on

I have just bought a 2001 rsv mille, when i got the bike the seller told me about a faulty oil light that stays on all the time, he said that a dealer had checked the bike over and found no issues?I have ran the bike for 20 miles with no issues, oil is new and right to the top of the pipe, the engine runs and sounds great. However i have noticed when starting that the exhaust in smoky and smells as though it is burning oil. Any ideas?

I would check how the dealer checked the oil level, as there is a specific method to checking the level, check previous posts on oil level.

Otherwise, do a quick check on a multimeter on the oil pressure switch and see if its either disconnected or broken.

Problem is it may well be fine, but if it becomes low in oil pressure and the light is on all the time how will you know:dunno, answer is you won't, so better to get it sorted now.

It may well have too much oil, lift the tank and check the airbox for oil in it, if there is clean it out and get the oil nice and hot in the engine, get the bike level and plumb and hold the throttla at 4k rpm check the level, you want to aim for no more than 60% up the tube, if it is you will get oil back in the airbox:thumbup

Firstly congrats on the new bike :thumbup

Secondly get someom=ne to kick you in the nuts for buying a bike with an oil pressure warning on the strength of the seller saying it's ok

The smell of oil could be overfilling but it wouldn't explain the oil light. It's a low pressure warning and you don't get low pressure from too much oil.
The obvious thing would be the pressure switch but you would have to ask why didn't the dealer that he says checked it out replace it. They are only about £10.

For sure if it were me i would want to confirm if i had an electrical fault or i really did have low oil pressure. If it really is a low pressure situation then it will cost you some money for sure and be a royal pain in the butt but to ride on oblivious and it sieze will cost you a whole lot more.
