Hi all

Need some help please. Have a 2003 RSV Tuono Fighter which I love to bits!

Just changed the oil and filter for the first time, which wasn't too difficult. Emptied oil out through sump plug on bottom of tank and removed the magnetic drain bolt which was clean, and used a K&N 152 filter. Never had any real issues with bike since I'be had it other than its really hard for me to remove my bloody big grin whenever I'm on it!

Followed the instructions and put 3.5l of oil back in, ran the engine for a minute, then put other 200ml in. Engine ran fine on idle, oil light went out etc.

Took it out today for first time since, intending to do six or seven miles then back home to check levels. Ran ok for first four miles or so, then noticed it felt a little sluggish and noticed the oil light was on. Panic!

Tootled home as I wasn't far away, and checked level in sight tube. Too much clearly and was about an inch above maximum level. Let it go cold and its now at maximum level on tube. Started it up, sounds a little rough and oil light permanently on again still. Panic! Help please guys......any ideas? Could this have happened due to overfill? Should i remove some oil and try and run it again?

Cheers guys

What grade oil are you using?
I'n not familier with K&N oil filters,...has your bike got the long filter conversion?

Too much oil is as bad as too little.
I've a gen 2 and oil level has to be checked when warm, so don't know about yours.
Is the oil filter the same size as the old?

Yeah, same size as the old, and the oil is 15w50 which is the recommended oil.

One more thing,....are you sure the filter is fitted the right way round?(rubber seal to engine crankcase)

are yer sure yer drained ALL the old stuff out?

yer didn't just drain the tank?

No, took the drain plug out as well.......wondering if maybe I didn't get it all out....but would too much illuminate the oil light?

The oil pressure light won't come on due to excess oil, you should check it hot, 2/3 up the tube is OK.
I would suggest you fit a standard oil filter, it's either a faulty sensor or a lack of oil pressure, maybe a wire off perhaps.

Oil light won't come on with too much oil unless you've blown something. Caveat here is Italian bikes. Free things first, drain some oil off. Also check air box to see if excess has been blown in there, this as a safety valve type thing. Excess oil in here will explain sluggishness.

I'd check filter orientation as well. That's three things to check. Hope the cure is simple excess oil! These engines are sensitive to it

Thanks guys. As much as I cant believe it, I had put the oil filter in back to front! Drained about 400ml out and its running with oil light out now. Its not running right though. Havent been able to get to the air filter yet (dont actually think its fitted with one!). I assume it may be worth it?

Cheers

good - it was a simple cheap fix - now you can get on with biking! won't run right if air box and air filter full of oily goo :yes

a simple check once fuel tank is in the air :thumbup

Update guys and further advice please.....

Been away for a couple of weeks so haven't had time to think about the bike until today, and believe it or not the two year old battery seems to be f**ked too, and i wouldn't mind but I have looked after it also. Well at least I thought I had! Stuck it on the optimiser and it showed full charge? Anyway, thats by the by really.....

Got bike started, with oil level just visible before hand. On choke, sounded fine, no oil pressure light etc. Happy boy! Then when choke went off, oil pressure light on on tickover. Goes off after 2000 revs and seems to stay off then.

Decided to take bike for a short run, however, as soon as I put it into gear and started to move off, there was a very strange sound from the front of the engine I would say, and it felt lumpy. Took it literally around the block and the engine sounded very peculiar and it felt like there was something lumpy in the engine. Straight back home (only took it about 200 yards) and switched it off. Battery had just about enough juice to turn it over once more, but it didn't really want to!

As well as changing the oil and filter previously, also changed the clutch slave which had been weeping for a little while. My mate, who is fabulous with all things mechanical changed it for me and it seems to be working fine. However, i am a little bothered by the fact that the strange sound co,ing from the engine only seems to be present when the bike is in gear or under a little pressure.

Help!!! Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. Desperately hoping not to have to send my baby to the local dealer.....

Thanks guys

Nlgel

Just read the whole thread again, hmm it ran for a good while initially with no oil pressure when you first changed the oil.
That may have done some damage to the engine bearings as Tifa said, either way you need it looked at by a man who can.
If your in the Midlands, Griff is your man at Aprilia Performance, others will advise you for other areas, good luck with it.
