Hi All.
Just a question for you.
When I last rode the bike in October the oil level was fine as I understood. ie low on the sight glass when cold and having stood for a while and half way up the glass immediatly after shutting off after a short ride or well warmed up.
However. I did the brown plug mod the other day and started the bike to check things over. Warmed it up well for 10mins, ( 97 showing on the gauge) but when I shut it off and checked the oil level it wa right at the bottom of the glass.
It was only a minute or so after shutting off that I checked the level this time, so dose the level drop that fast in the tank or have I got a problem

Cheers Jeff

I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens repeatedly or you find an oil leak. mine does this aswell, the level stays the same for months then one day it will drop to minimum, top it up & it stays there for ages again :dunno

Unfortunately, you gotta ride the bike for a while for the level to settle properly . I overfilled mine 'cos I kept topping up, running for a minute and topping up again. You could try sticking it on a paddock stand and running in gear for a while..

Quick way to check oil level.

Run the bike until the fans have cut in twice, turn off and immediately hold the bike upright (preferably on a very flat surface) and check oil level.

Ran the bike today and allowed the fans to cut in twice, switched off and checked the level. still not on the sight glass.
How much oil do you have to lose or add for the oil level to go from mid glass to just off it?
As I sais in the first part of the thread level was ok in Octiober. Not riden the bike since, I did notice evidance of a small weep from the base gaskit on the front cylinder today but don't think it would be the amount i seem to have lost.

The level will drop but maybe not that quickly.

1st off I would check for leaks, then check the airbox for any unusual oil level (there is or should be a little site tube), then check for oil in the water.

If that is all good add around 100 -150 mls of oil and check again. The trick is to top up gradually a little at a time.

Failing that do a complete oil change so that you can guarantee the correct amount of oil is in there.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Planing on doing an oil change before the season starts anyway but was a little concerned why all of a sudden the oil level has gone down. It was ok all summer (1500miles).

Cheers

Jeff
