Oil leak? - oil on flywheel cover and pickup

Hi All,

I've had my 2004 RSV for about 5 weeks now, on the whole I'm pretty damn delighted with the bike - however, just started to notice oil on the flywheel cover, and particularly round the pickup. I've wiped the oil off, but it re-appears after a ride, not much, but enough to be noticeable.

Anyone got any ideas where it might be coming from, I've attached a picture below? The clean bit round the pickup is where I've just wiped it off.

I've checked all round the oil tank etc and I'm stumped...!

Thanks

Mike

The top of the Oil Tank looks like its got oil staining on it too.
Check its not coming from the airbox, secondaly these tanks can split along the seams sometimes not enough to be noticeable to the eye but when hot and under a bit of pressure the seam weeps a bit.
Clean the tank around all the seams with brake cleaner , when dry tape the seams up with some masking tape , go for a ride etc if the tank is leaking it will be visiable on the masking tape

Hope this helps ?

When was that piccie taken?

Reason I ask is that I can see an awful lot of oil in that sight tube.

Too much oil in the bike and it'll get blown in to the air box and dribble down and coat the bike in oil such as we see now.

Nice one - and an unbelievably quick reply! I'll give that a go now...and post results. I knew I'd have issues once I booked a trackday and donny, not sure this will be sorted for monday...

Pic taken with the bike cold

There's your problem then.

Too much oil in it.

You'll need to drain off a bit and monitor the leak, as Scott says these oil reservoirs have a tendency to leak on the seams.

Oil level is measured when warm (after a 10 mile ride and I mean 10 miles), bike upright and idling, should be no more than 3/4 of the way up the sight tube.

Right-o, I'll see how that goes. Would you recommend draining some oil out first, or going for a ride and seeing where it sits?

Ride it first just to make sure that the level rises.

The sight tubes can get blocked and it could give you a false reading.

Ok, short story, this is fixed - Thanks for the quick responses!

Longer story....

Based in the responses I was hoping that this was simply a case of too much oil in the tank, however a 10 mile ride showed the oil to be halfway up the sight tube...and a nice new oil stain on the flywheel case...

So, as suggested by kiwi_rsvr I clean all round the tank seam with brake cleaner, and clean off any oil that I can find. I take out the oil filler cap to clean round that (very tight to undo) and I let everything dry, tape up the seam of the oil tank with masking tape and go for another 10 mile ride...No new oil stain, and no oil on the masking tape...:dunno

So, go for another 10 mile ride, this time with no masking tape, get home, no new oil stain...:dunno

Leave the bike over night, go for long ride the next day, no oil stain! I can only assume this has something to do with the oil filler cap?!:dunno

Anyway, despite consistently leaking the last 4 rides its now stopped - I've fitted a new rear tyre, spent this afternoon scrubbing it in and now I'm all set for donnington park on monday - anyone else going?

Thanks
Mike

I had this aswell............;it was coming from the oil screw cap!!

ps and change your slave cylinder for a MPL unit youll thank me for it in the end.

just to add, the warm engine should be switched off, not idling when checking your oil level
