Oil Consumption

Hi Guys, any one tell me how much oil I should expect to use? Checking level is a bit of a pain! 2,500 miles done and top up to upper limit (probably too much really) required 1/3 litre. Does that seem excesive? Or are these things as thirsty with oil as with petrol!
Still worth every penny!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Petrol and oil..........they just can`t get enough of it!

I keep a close eye on my oil levels topping it up every 150 - 250 miles otherwise she`s going to start running low and i keep a small bottle under the seat just in case it needs topping up on a 200 or 300 mile journey.

Tis a bit of a pain in the tits but running it low on oil is probably the easiest way to bend your engine?

I wouldn't think that 1/3 of a litre in 2500 miles is excessive, especially if you've been really twisting its tail. Most of my bikes and cars use a little if you're spinning it up. I wouldn't worry about it. I would keep an eye on it though. rig1 is correct that letting it run low on oil is a great way to turn the motor into a solid piece with no moving parts.

Thanks Guys. I'lll keep an eye on BOTH! Already had low coolant 'cos it was leaking slightly at top of that tube on right hand side. Poxy clips - what's wrong with proper jubilee type! Do intend to keep small bottle of oil under seat (especially on Germany trip next month!) - good idea, RIG1. Bit of a learning curve really, had Kawasakis for 20 years, all but one new and never had to top up oil between services. Did a Spain trip with no appreciable oil consumption. Something else that adds to 'T's character?

Just watch you don't overfill by accident. My T oil level seems to vary between the high and low mark depending on whether it has been run recently or the phase of the moon. If it reads low, it would pay to run it till warm (and check level while running - mine seems to come way up) then leave and check again after sitting for a while (bike vertical and on level ground - obvious I know)

Anyone else find this variation in oil level?

Mine seems to use a little between services but maybe only one little topup about 250ml or so. I use my bike daily as commuter to work.

You`ve got off lightly, mine goes through about 500 ml every 1000 miles

Maybe you fang yours a bit harder!!:cheers

Seriously though, my oil sometimes is below the low mark and I am tempted to top up, then after running it is up near full. I though it would be the other way round. Go figure.

I'll give mine a bit more stick once the roads dry out from this wet winter and see what my oil does:thumbup

Did a search & found this old thread. My T needs topping up every 200 miles or so, which is a bit of a pain.
How much do others use, and would using a mineral oil for 500 miles help re-bed things in again?

Mine was in the middle of the gauge and went for a 400 mile run, it was still above the Min mark when I got home. Sounds like you might be a touch Anal m8.

Read yer manual and see what it say's about the oil level. Do it mucker.

My Tuoldo used to go through oil like a 2 stroke, some when after about 10-12k it pretty much stopped using oil between services.

Oh - and check the level after the engine has been ridden for at least 10 minutes, and upright etc. It's a bit of a faff, but you get used to checking when you stop.

Always check the oil after the engine has been running till warm.....shut it off and wait 5-10 ins.....you'll get the correct reading from there!!

Put some decent line marks on the oil level and water level yourself so you can see easier.

What Andirsv and Paul said. Its a dry sump. It needs to be checked when hot. Its not uncommon to see no oil at all in the sight tube when cold.

I appreciate all the comments, but was wondering how much oil your bikes used.

The Rotax mill's often use quite a lot when they are new - as I said it was somewhere around 10k when mine stopped drinking oil. There doesn't seem to be an amount they use, it varies depending on the bike and rider.

mines an 09 r with just over 2500 on the clock, oil light came on when on the side stand (on a flat driveway) and i thought it was fine, so i turned it off, left it upright and it looked fine, fired her up again, checked it when i was at home (when still hot) and it was in the middle of the two lines? put in a little oil any way (about 250ml) and it was on the max, its fine now.

Read the instructions on Oil level, Think you'll find yer bikes got a dry oil sump and as sutch the engine neededs to be driven or 10 mins before you get an acurate oil level read.

Aldo.

Oooooppps. Anyone here an echo.

Whit a fud.
