Hi guys and guyesses (if there are any here). My name's Daz and I'm a newbie here and just bought my first Aprilia, a 51 plate RSV Mille and I'm loving her. Problem I have is all I got for my hard earned cash is the Mille and the key to get her going. I want to change the oil and oil filter but I'm unsure as to what oil to use and what part number filter to get. I'd be eternally grateful for this info :thumbup

Hi Dazzler

The opinion varies greatly mate - Everyone has different tastes when it comes to Oil but a lot of people I know who have the earlier Mille or Tuono use 15/50 semi-synthetic oil.
I use Motul 5100 semi synth 15/50, as I've found its the best one for me, you can pick it up cheap enough here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150371754380&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2162wt_907
Although Tash is doing deals at the moment for Motul oil and filters I think....

As for the Oil filter I use Hi-Flo Filtro HF 152 - again you can find them on eBay or cheaply enough from your local bike dealer.

Hope this helps mate - NickyBoy :biggrin

Welcome, make sure you get the right length filter. There's a short (~75mm) and long (~100mm) filter available. You'll be able to check what length it is by looking at your oil filter cap:

You can see the short cap is on the bike (fits pretty much flush) and the extended cap is in his hand.

mate, find out what oil is in semi or fully synthetic, i remember reading about clutch slip when using different grade oil - try a search for it. However dont shoot me if it turns out to be a bollocks urban myth!

Cheers and welcome to the madhouse

Dave

Hi. I filled my 02 mille with castrol power 1 racing which is fully synthetic ( not to be confused with power1 GPS which is semi synthetic). Then read on this forum that you should only use semi synth because of clutch slip. I have only done about 400 miles on it but it seems ok so far. No clutch slip but wish I read up on here first. I have a question though. Is it ok to go back to semi synth on my next oil change? I have heard conflicting stories about oil turning to sludge when mixed. Probably going back to the days when mineral oil was the norm. Showing my age now. :hmmm

You'll be fine. If you don't have any slip now you'll be ok to leave the oil in. I think the only oils to make clutches slip are the car ones with friction modifiers.
