Not starting / Clicking noise

Hi guys, I have 2008 RSVR fitted with a 12v battery, it is kept on optimate permanently and it is showing 11.5 on the bike display. Never had a prob before, but now I get a clicking noise from (i'm guessing) the solenoid when trying to start it, what do you think, duff battery or duff solenoid? - I'm loathed to fork out 50 60 quid on a new battery if the solenoid is the problem. - Any help greatly appreciated, cheers.

To be honest you might as well start with the solenoid and upgrade it to a 150amp one because sooner or later its worth doing anyway. Im not sure what amp the 08 model comes as stock but jumping from 50amp to 150amp certainly helps on the earlier models.

There's more chance that it's the battery.
Expecting it to fire up with just 11.5v is asking a bit much given that you need juice for the Fi pump/ecu as well as the starter motor.
Charge it up properly and see what happens
ISTR you need a minimum of 12v at the battery because the ecu doesn't like low voltages.
Put a meter across the battery terminals, then try to crank it over.
If the battery voltage falls below 10.v your battery is toast.

Thanks, ordered a new Yuasa 12v from mpw-direct.com for £32.97 inclusive of VAT + delivery. Duff battery is original so guess that max 5/6 years use can be expected.

Gents. If I could pick your brain for some advice. I have a RSVR 2006. I rode the other day without an issue. Turned bike off and parked it overnight in my garag. Went to start the RSV the following day when nothing. The usual startup sounds etc sounded, headlights on and dash lot up. I hit the starter and I only get a click followed by the engine turning over without starting. Dash volts read 11.5, under load 9.

I charged my battery using a trickle charger, then hooked it back to the RSVR. The dash read 12.2 volts. I attempted to the start the bike. The ECU went through the startup sequence with the usual sounds. The engine turned over but it did not start. Under load the voltage dropped from 12.2 to 10.

The dash displayed EFI and a red triangle. I have a new stator too. Rewound 11 months ago. Battery is 12 months old. Surely it isn't buggered?

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Cheers.

Your battery is u/s. Buy and fit a Motobatt - you will be amazed at the difference! (A small modification to the battery retaining clamp is required).

Thanks for your reply andreas. my useless battery was a Motobatt - 11 months old in fact. I bought a Yuasa, chucked it on the trickle charge to be sure and then installed. Went through the 15 sec turn on then turn off sequence. cycled through to the volt metre, which displayed 12.1 volts. Sigh.... same as my last battery. I turn it over and straight down to 9 volts under load... again, sigh. So I checked all the connectors in the tail and under both the L and R side fairings. Opened them all and gave them a little wipe. Sprayed a little contact spray for good measure too.

I haven't removed the tank or nose yet.

Starter solenoid is from a Yamaha, I have a rewound stator and I removed the brown connector plug under the reg/rect for also good measure!

Diagnostic setup read EFI and no faults.

Any suggestion would be welcome.

You could try this;

With the ignition off, remove the riders seat and behind the battery you should see two (green?) 30 amp fuses. Take them out and put them back in (make sure they've not 'blown'). My bike soemtimes shows the same problems as yours and when I do this it then starts. Zeus knows why; 'cause I don't.
