F**K mate were they in the oil? that doesn't look good. Hope it's nothing serious. Sorry I cant help but my fingers are crossed for you.

that would'nt come out the oil drain plug ? sure it wasnt in the oil pan already ?

im not sure? how wud it have found its way into the oil though? BB yeh it is the drain plug, but the secondary one near the rar sprocket, these bits were attached to the plug when i pulled it out. i really hope its nothing too major

just read a thread by newboots from a while back saying he found exactly the same thing in his oil..... it was the sprag surclip! i was hoping it wudnt b this but looks like it might b a new sprag. how likely is it that this may have done some serious damage? and will it cost much to get somebody to fit a new sprag?

Sorry for your bad news mate. I hope it's a cheap and easy fix for ya.

If it makes you feel any better, the worst thing I've ever found in my oil was 10 litres of petrol. Try emptying that into a 5 litre drain pan!

Mike.

Looks like the clip to me, if it is I would do a full strip and rebuild. God only knows where the rest of the bits might be.

Yep, I confirm that they are mos def bits of sprag circlip - probably due to the circlip being refitted with a BMW sprag. Thread here
Pull the filter and see if you can find any more bits. Then get something like one of those magnetic pick-up tools (mine's telescopic) with about 5mm head or less that will fit down the oil way in the filter housing. Hopefully you will fish out a few more bits.
You might also want to change the oil and even use a flushing oil. I still get micro-particles of metal in my filter when I change it.
All I can tell you is that mine's done two track trips to Spain, several other track days and some road miles since I did the sprag and (touchwood) it still goes like a train. I'm assuming that the oil path from the generator chamber goes into the filter first, so preventing the bits wreaking havoc.
As long as it's starting OK, don't bother having a new sprag fitted - you don't need to as the circlip isn't doing anything - that's why it moved about and broke up!
Otherwise, without a full strip down, there's not a lot more you can do so you might as well ride it and not worry about it.
Hope this puts your mind at rest:thumbup

cheers a303, i was going to do an oil and filter change 2day as it happened untill i came across these bits! the bike does have a little trouble starting but its never been a major problem. getting the sprag done is a pretty big and expensive job tho ent it? i will c if i can fish anymore bits out coz the only other bits i found were metal shavings in the old oil filter. if i cant find ne more will i deffo have to strip the whole thing down or would i get away with just the sprag? cheers for your advice m8

All I can tell you is that mine's been like it since November 2008!
BTW, the oilway I meant when I said about getting a magnet in there is the one with the bolt where you found the bits, not in the filter housing, sorry.
The sprag is not a major job to do yourself if you have a bit of mechanical savvy - cheaper bits are available than the Aprillia items - do a search on here, I think AMB had a line on some cheap BM sprags.
But I stress, if your sprag is working OK then you don't need to change it just for the sake of the circlip. If you want to, you can whip the side cover off while you have the oil out (try and save the gasket or you'll have to buy a new one; Griff should have them in stock) and have a look around for more bits of circlip. You won't be able to get to the sprag without pulling the flywheel which is quite a bit more hassle.

PM sent mate....it's a bit frightening to find lumps of metal in your oil...but good advice from A303...Try not to worry!
