Off to look at an 05 Honda CRF450 for sand racing and green laning :inlove for over the winter.
Anyone any ideas how easy it is to get these road registered and converting it to having lights etc?
Thanks guys STL:thumbup

not sure on the laws over there, but its kinda a PITA here....you might want to look at the enduro model instead. :O

Yeah been looking at DRZ400 aswell and putting some SM wheels on, have heard they are a bit gutless though

One of the guys here has a DRZ and although he like it for handling and comfort he reckons it is gutless and really vibey when revved hard (which he seems to have to do to make it go)

From my CR days (80's) they had no electrics to speak of , certainly nothing to drive lights/indicators.

Why would you want to ruin an `05 plate crosser on the sand. You`ll need to strip it down to nothing after every race and replace, chain and sprockets, air filter, swingarm bearings etc etc.
You be better off (imho) buying an old cr500 for the beach and a decent toy just for green laning. :thumbup

Maybe not a strip every race but they are very competitive on the beach , am just concerned about the top end rebuilds required as they need doing quite regular, will only do a couple of meets on the sand, green laneing mostly i hope, thats why am looking at drz`

If your concerned about top end rebuilds fella avoid a 4 stroke all day long. a cr/kx500 will do season without a piston or rings. bullet proof and more bottom end for sand. plus you can gear then up for top speed if you need to. prpoer handfull though :eatcorn

them kwaks are serious coin and not road going, J you got me thinking i really dont know what i want, by the sounds of it your right i need to sack the sand idea off for another bike and concentrate on looking for a laner, any ideas on this route?

Depends on how much you want to spend really mate.
Whichever green laner you go for try and make sure it has an electric start. They can be a ba5tard to start when they are hot and your knackered.
I ran a WR250f for a couple of years and it was awesome. Only thing that let it down was the fact that 65mph on the road was more than enough. If your looking to ride any distance to get off road go for a 400+. KTM`s are reputed to be very good but can be heavy on the wallet, the CRF is fantastic as is the WR 400/450. Some great deals to be had at this time of year too. If you look hard enough you might find supermoto`s for sale with off road wheels. That would be the way to go, a supermoto will help your road riding no end, loads of sideways fun:thumbup

an early 90`s 500 would be perfect for beach racing and parts are still dirt cheap too. something like this,,, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Honda-CR500-m...=39:1|66:2|65:7|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14.

I would think you`d get a decent laner with a set of SM wheels on for around the £2500 mark, a beach basher for £500-750.
Smile factor,,, priceless:thumbup

This might be a better option fella. I know it`s a bit more expensive but you could always ask him to meet you half way, I`m a very similar size to you mate and the Suzuki may be too small. The Yam seat height will suit you better. The DRZ`s are know to suit those challenged in the height dept :thumbup Very clean looking thing though.

Have looked at a couple of yams and definitely like them, i will give this chap an email see where we get to, cheers J, you definitely know your stuff.
what about SM wheels , would i need to change anything else?

I think the only thing you`ll need to have is an adapter plate for the front brake caliper. SM wheels will generally run a bigger disc so you need a calpier bracket that moves your caliper out inline with the disc.:thumbup

Let us know how you get on fella :thumbup

OK purchase made, i pic the beastie up tomorrow, :biggrin
Gas Gas Pampera 04 250cc 2 stroke,
Thanks for all your help J, much appreciated, thanks again :thumbup:thumbup
Pictures to follow

Your welcome fella. Hope you like.
I think I a rake of MX gear in the garage doing nothing. I`ll dig it out and if any of it is any use your welcome to it.

Well done fella.

that would be awesome as i need everything, was gonna make do with road bits but if you can have a look i would much appreciate, thanks again

Good job mucker, thinking of giving it a go again meself after many years of road riding. Just bought my 14yr old a YZ125 and its a riot. I had a YZ250 and a KX back in the 80's,forgot how much fun it was:eatcorn

Cant wait i pick it up after work so it will be dark :angry but who gives a dogs chops , not me.
Off for a hoon round smelling the 2 stroke :inlove
All insured and withdrawn the cash so no going back now, hopefully it will help with my riding skills too :doug
Lots of wheelies

I reckon it does help riding skills to have done a bit of mx, controlling slides and wheelies etc.:eatcorn
