hi guys, ive just got my mille been after one for ages and i got it for a good price, its pretty straight but has a slightly worrying fault,at tick over it seems to tick pretty loudly yet if i pick the revs up slightly it goes away,(or i cant hear it) almost seems like a tappet or camchain possibly but im not too sure,it came with fsh but i dont know if the clearances have been done, any ideas? also are they shim and buckets or locknuts and adjusters as i dont have a manual yet.also ive got a bit of clutch slip at high revs and the fluids black in the reservoir.?many thanks:dowhat

To be honest, the 990V60 Rotax lump isn't known for it's "quiet" qualities. Lots of 'em can seem to "tick" at idle. I've heard of very few valve clearances being out of limits, quite rare to hear of any needing shimmed.

One thing that can cause a ticking noise is if the TB's need adjusted / synced. When did it last get done?.

difficult to diagnose the 'ticking' without hearing it but as said these engines do rattle when hot

the clutch fluid is black due to the breakdown of the hose. it is easy to change the fluid but it will become black again very quickly.

you could change the hose and maybe give the slave cylinder an overhall.

as for clutch slipping you need to inspect the clutch it may be oil related or down to wear quite often roughing the steels can cure minor clutch slip

thanks for the replies, its just like a metallic ticking at idle, almost a knock but does seem to go over 1500rpm and ive got the standard can on it too, ive no idea when the tb's were last sync'd (if at all) ill do it as ive got a set of mercury gauges, can you tell me where the take offs are on the tb's? cheers

Mine does it mate , i have recently asked this question on...Ahem, erm, some other aprilia forum and the general opinion was most of them rattle and knock a little esp when been on a run, yep and my fluid is black too....:)

mine ticks like a good 'un. i suspect valve clearances on mine havent been done since noah built the ark. its on my list of things to check/do

My 2007 is a bit noisy, too. I went back to 15w-50 AGIP from 10w-40 CASTROL ACTIVO (my winter mix) and rode it 35 miles and most of the noise went away. As for the manuals......

Download to your heart's content, just know the model year span may not match yours. Differences may include, among other things, forks, Showa or Ohlins, the processes and torques will be different.

these close up and make the engine quieter ...so noise isnt a bad thing

i hope so ! but as long as she doesnt seize/blow i'll be happy and just put up with the noise. its funny because i once did the valve clearances on an fzr400 exup i had and it was noisier AFTER i had done the clearances. i took my time and did it properly too so not too happy about having a bash on mine

What is your idle at that you can tell it goes away at 1500rpm...idle should be close to 1300 so if 200 more gets rid of the noise its nothing to worry about....i suspect your idle is low.

Deglaze your clutch plates with a 180 grade sandpaper. I also put a small shim (8mm washer) on my clutch springs. That was on a 99 mille and it didn't slip again all last year and only just sold it.
Be careful not to damage the diaphragm as you pull off the engine clutch cover. Use a blade to seperate it from the surface and apply some grease on the refit.
Make sure clutch plates go in the correct way.

does the noise go away when you pull the clutch in ? could be your clutch basket worn
now you mention this mate mine does have a kind of pulsing noise that goes away when i pull the clutch. Do you know if i can just remove the clutch cover with the bike on the side stand without it spilling any oil out ? I have a feeling i can but just want to check first ...

thanks for the replies, ive got a fair but of clutch rattle which im not too worried about as its fairly normal with most bikes ive had,it just sounds like a tappet or maybe a bit of camchain noise but pick the revs up 2k onwards and it seems to go away.anyways ive done a few hundred miles on it now and it runs sweet as a nut so im not too bothered, the clutch slip seems to be ok now too,but i think im going to put an extra washer on the springs to beef them up a bit (when i stop riding it every day),im used to riding a 3k miles gsxr 1000 which is as quiet as a mouse and i remember my old tl1000s was noisy too, maybe its just a twin thing..or i need a louder can!

hi bud, if you pick the revs up to 2k the noise will go away anyway because youve got load on the plates then only at idle you will get clatter or rattle from your clutch on a 4 cyl bike it wont be as bad but v-twin will make it sound worse just the same as diesel and petrol cars ,ive been a gearbox builder for 19 years but only on cars but the bike is the same idea .if you got a noise dont let it get that bad or could cost a few quid if it goes bang mate .good thing is doing a bike clutch is a doddle its the price of the parts thats the killer . good luck mate :)
