Hi to everyone,
I ride a 2007 RSVR, last weekend I had a trip to snetterton, which is about 150 miles from where I live, about 50 miles into the journey the bike started cutting out, like it was running out of fuel!!! This woul be a 1-2 second cut out then fire again!! It got me to snetterton. On the way back it did the same,it run for about fifty miles between 80-90 mph and didn't miss a beat, but then started cutting out to the point it became unrideable....
Any ideas

Hi, and welcome. I had a similar problem (same year and model bike) but it only seemed to happen at low(ish) revs. Usually approaching roundabouts, but also a couple of times on Dual Carriageways.

To cut a long story short, I took it to Aprilia Performance, and they have narrowed it down to the fuel pump, as when we took it apart, there seemed like there was water in the tank, and corrosion on the fuel pump itself. I thought it was me, but one of the lads did a road test and it happened to him a few times in a short time. If you know anyone with the same bike, try flicking the ignition and listening to the pump surge (with the cap open) and see if it sounds any different. Mine was reasonably obvious, but not having owned an Ape before I didn't know any different. I'm putting this down to most likely being sat idle for years, as it has only done 7,500 miles, and the previous owner barely used it.

The fuel pump seems to make sense, and to be honest I haven't done that many miles on it in the last year or so.
I'd also read that the stand cut out switch can become faulty, but I would have thought this would cut the bike out completely!!!
Thanks for that Jack I'll take a look at the pump!!! Also I had noticed a change in the sound of the pump when I turn the ignition.

No worries mate. I've read about the stand switch too, but also saw somewhere that the light will sometimes come on as though it was still down, but not sure about that.

aprilia performance highly knowledgeable

there are not many people about now that know these bikes as well

Griff the head honcho used to be head of the technical department at piaggio when they owned aprilia so knows these bikes like the back of his horrible hairy hands

Got mine back yesterday. and I'm glad to say it is better than ever! Feels much quicker, and best of all, it doesn't Bloody cut out on me anymore! Griff showed me the small filter bag inside the pump, that looks a bit like a tea bad, and it was absolutely caked in s**t! if you touched it, your hand were instantly covered in a grey dust. It looked as though there was a lot of oxidisation on, in and around the pump and caused it to stop working anywhere near 100%. But I can't thank those guys enough, and I'm going back soon to get a little upgrade sorted!

No, sorry. But just imagine a bag of 'grey-ish' flour had been dropped on it... that's what it looked like.

just oxidisation from the water being in the tank for so long. the bike had only 7,500 miles when I picked it up, so I would assume it's been sat around doing nothing for quite some time.
