New Problems Now!!!!!!!

B

Beanie

Hi guys,

Managed to blow the gearbox on the car, so now have to use bikes again for work, :thumbup damn shame,:devious

So, decided to take the mille today, bike started no problem and ran great, did a quick volt check on the battery to make the reg/rectifier was all right since it did its overheat thing, and was great.

Took bike up the road, and noticed the speedo wasn't registering speed or distance, just stayed at zero.

Took the bike up onto the motorway, and she was great, got to work to find a pool of oil under the bellypan and dripping inderneath, so had a quick look underneath to see a stone through my oil cooler, now i'm :pirate.

got the bike home, did some searching around and have got a new oil cooler on its way to me now for £40.

So my questions are, what would cause the speedo to stop registering, i know theres a pickup point on the bike somewhere ???????? or when the reg/rectifier did a bertie, has that damaged something else???????

When i come to fit the oil cooler, because the oil is held in a seperate tank, can i get away with just uncoupling the old one and bolting the new one into place, and then letting it bleed the air out of itself when running, or do i have to drain all the oil out and do it another way ??????????????

cheers

Also, i have put back on the original end can and hangers and noticed that it gets really hot against my boot/back of leg, is this normal????

The pick up for the speedo on my RSV is on the back wheel, probably all in the same place just below the brake caliper.

well i have had the back wheel out to get a new tyre fitted, and i used some brake cleaner on the caliper mounting plate to get rid of the red paint on it, so may be something has come loose or broken.

Any idea about the oil cooler question?

... Which is exactly where the notoriously fragile speedo pickup is located! Kiwi reckoned he rebuilt his so you may be able to rip it apart and fix it.

Don't see why you couldn't change the cooler without draining all the oil (apart from the mess). If you do an oil change, it will be empty anyway and the oil always manages to find its way in without bleeding.

Hi there,
As "A303" said, I doubt that you would have to bleed the oil system, the oil will find its way through on start up, just let it idle for a bit on start up to allow the oil to circulate.

Well i have a late start tomorrow morning, so will get my butt down the post office to collect it, and if i have a early finish then will get it fitted tomorrow.

As for the speedo sensor, managed to rip the rubber cover off it tonight and the inside soldered pins are a bit corroded, so will resolder them to a bit of cleaner wire and then fill it back in with some black sealant to keep the moisture/crud out.

Thank the stars my zxr is still on the road, cos with no car or rsv, i would have been stuffed for getting to work and out and about.

Cheers for the help guys, i'll post pics tomorrow night if i can of what the speedo sensor insides look like before and after.
