New Owner Suspension definitive please !!!

Afternoon all,

As the new owner of a 2006 Tuono R I am contemplating an upgrade of the suspension but would appreciate some real life honest answers on the points below please. I ride probably 10-12 times a year, just a Sunday blaster on A/B roads so bear this in mind, and perhaps 1-2 trackdays in novice !

1. Is it worth opting for the full Ohlins forks, damper and rear shock from the factory version ?
2. Would upgrading just the rear shock to an Ohlins Factory suffice ?
3. Upgarding the springs, front and rear to Hyperpro or similar ?
4. Just leave it as it is and get it professioanlly set-up ?

Fortunately I have the funds to do option 1 but would like the benefit of others experiences to make my decision before I potentially waste load of cash, and before you ask I didn't opt for the Factory due to a personal preference on the colour scheme (I don't like the gold frame !)

Thanks in advance guys, and mine's a Guinness . . .

You don't give your location, my advice would be take it to a specialist, the back shock is usually considered rubbish, replace it.
The front forks can be made to work quite well, a specialist would any work to suit your weight, riding style etc.

Thanks Ash, I'm just outside of Manchester, what shock should I go for / the factory Ohlins ?

Be very interested to find out what route you go here as i have to say the feedback from the rear of mine is not the best. However i do think that a lot of my problems is the time of year, i have not yet ridden the bike in decent conditions. Roll on April..

My issues are in mid corner and trying to get to full lean, no confidence in it at all, it all feels a bit too rigid, but yes April can't come quickly enough !

Most people go for ohlins, but there are other brands out there that work well on the Tuono, there's a place called Kais up that way,
Garry would probably know where they are, no doubt he'll be along shortly.

I know Kais well, Johnno has done some work for me before, I'll give them a nudge once I've sourced a shock, thanks Ash

If you've got the dosh Ohlins rear & front set up. Felix on here did just that & says it transformed his bike. I tried following him on some twisties and he was away, I was fighting like hell to keep up.
The sachs adjustable of the bay is a bit better than the one fitted, but they go for a lot less than he's asking

I couldnt get on with mine on standard Suspension.... back end was like a pogo stick. Took it to Reactive suspension in york and his opening line was "the only way that will handle is if you ditch that rear shock - its a pile of ****".
He went on to explain that he wasnt trying to sell me one and that sachs do make good shocks, just that aprilia had this one built to a budget. He recommended that i buy a second hand Ohlins off ebay.
As i was there, i went ahead and got him to set it up on existing stuff. Didnt really make any difference. Still kept trying to chuck me off. He did comment that there is "not much wrong with the front" and that i should try a different shock on the back.
Loved the bike so bought a S/H ohlins (ebay about £220 ?) - on the basis that i could always sell it on again if it didnt suit me.

Best mod ive done. Set it to standard settings and away i went. Made the bike so much better.

All i can say is that it worked for me. Maybe try one and if you dont like it then just stick it back on ebay... doubt you'd lose much.....

the two way adjustable shock from the later T's are rubbish...bnut the standard sachs shocks from the RSV and earlyier Tuonos are pretty good!

its al about set up!

anyone interested in a suspension set up seminar at the workshop??

its free or almost free....all i ask is for everyone who turns up to bring somw biccies or some tea bags or sommat for us all to share??

worth it just for the larf!

Griff, i think thats a great idea but unfortunately for me im 350miles away:banghead however if its ever an option when the weather improves then i would love to take a trip down.

So do you reckon the one thats on my T which is an early 2006 Gen 2 would be ok, the bikes only covered 7K miles so far what sort of mileage are they good for?

Cheers
Mark

It looks like you're from Cheshire?
If so, you're pretty close to Maxton near Frodsham.
Give Richard Adams a ring, (01928 740531) and he'll sort you out with a custom setup.
Very little difference cost wise compared to the Ohlins, but nicer made imho.
