This is my first post so be gentle. I have lots of questions. I got my 03 Mille on Saturday. It has a Meta M357T - V2 Alarm with a circular fob. Now, usually when I try to start it I press the round black fob BUT me being me decided to press the button on the actual key, something I have never done before.

Now stupid question number 1 (no it's not the last), does this activate something different to what the round fob does? cos although the engine was spinning, it wouldn't start, didn't even sound like it was trying to start. Revs went up to 6000, fuel pump came on, hit the start button but it just kept turning over. As a result, a flat battery. I tried little choke, lots of choke, no choke all the same result nothing. Usually she fires up really quickly. Even tried to open the throttle fully, this did do something and it did sound like it wanted to start but by this point the battery was on it's last breath.

I bought the bike from a dealer and no manual came with it. So, as a result even the simplest jobs are a complete mystery at the moment. Stupid question number 2. I need to remove the seat to get to the battery so I can recharge it. Am I right in thinking it's 2 bolts located somewhere under the foam? Don't laugh, its late, it was dark and it was cold. Was also muttering phrases like 'if this was a Jap bike, this wouldn't of happened.'

So please tell me what I did wrong. Is that how you take off the seat? Any tips on starting from cold would be great. E.G. How much choke. Where to kick it in a Henry Fonzorelli sort of way to make it work.

sounds like you flooded it bud as its real easy with these if you dont start it quick.

wait till battery re charged and try again (i find full throttle till she goes works for me when its cold)

as for the alarm i remove them if there on a bike as i hate the things!!

enjoy the millie and welcome

you may want to try a few mods but im sure you read post's like all new millie owners

Ok, gave it quite alot of choke as she hasn't been started in a few days. How long should I leave it before trying again once it floods. I could smell petrol. How much choke is enough without flooding it? The battery hasn't been on an Optimate. Would using a booster damage anything if I hooked it up and tried to start it?

I have been riding bikes on and off since i was 12 yrs old. This isn't the first bike I have flooded but I have always managed to get them going. This bike makes me feel like a total newbie. Turn key, apply some choke, hit the start button. Ain't hard is it? So next time I think I will ignore the choke and go straight to the throttle to start it. Good idea or bad? Full throttle or half throttle? Are all Italian women this difficult to turn on? :dunno

the rsv can be a little awkward to start at times.

normally leave it so the excess can evaporate

there is no choke as such it is simply a fast idle lever so makes no difference if you used the throttle (but normal start is fast idle and no throttle)

you may need new plugs too as these bikes do seem to need regular plug changes .

hth

Mine is always kept on an Optimate as the twin plus an alarm does drain the battery, don't give it full choke or full throttle but about a quarter inch, you will soon learn how much is enough, keep your thumb close to the choke to turn it down if you have gone too far, don't touch the throttle until she is warmed up. I don't ride off until the temp is at least 46c and then gentle throttle until she is upto her working temp of 76c. Mine has an uprated battery and starter motor and it does make a difference.
If you get an Optimate they come with a connector that attaches to the battery that can then be fed through to under the rear hump so you don't have to take the seat off each time.

what Red said :thumbup not to much throttle if at all and fast idle then knock it back well it works on my falco when I don't drop it on the floor. My understanding and I think the manual bears this out is that you should not use too much if any throttle possibly because the engine is dry? Optimate or similar is a good idea (especially with an alarm fitted,) as without running they drain in a couple of weeks oh and make sure lights are off or on low at least.

Falco Seat has two allen bolts you need to push the foam back / in at near enough the widest point to see them you can get quick release pins if you want I haven't I was going to but I haven't ... yet :biggrin

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Think it's just a case of getting used to the bike and what works. I have an older ZX6r and just walked up to the RSV and started it the same way. Turn key, handful of choke and hit the button, only nothing started. Hope this doesn't happen alot, can really ruin someone's day. Will be using the 'fast idle' lever very gingerly from now on.
I have already bought an upgraded starter relay from Wemoto. I read on here there's a guy call Killaprilla who sells the best battery, thicker wiring and earth straps etc, sounds like i need them pronto. Is he still around?

Generally I would go with the uprated starter and make sure your battery has a good charge first then change as and when you need to for the better bits enjoy

Will be getting a new 14v battery at the weekend. Looked at loads on Ebay but none of them tell you if they are CCA 230+ rated. Also a bit wary of cheap Chinese knock offs. Anyone have a link to a proper, top of the range battery that isn't Chinese. Don't mind paying a bit of money but don't want to replace **** with ****.

Either get on touch with griff at aprilia performance or nooj who I think is on here if not pm me and I will pass your details

Think you mean a 14 amp battery not 14v!!!
Yep thats a good start more capacity = more CCA = easier starting of the big vee
Havn't got mine yet but I'm gonna buy a yellow motobatt MBTX12U has glass absorbant matt technology (usa made) like this one ebay is cheapest price by the way if you want one, these are highly rated by all who have purchased them on this forum!!!:thumbup
Even though they are 12amp the innards give then an extra boost for cold cranking upto 200+ I believe..................
