Hi all,

Just thought I'd say hello as I've just joined today.

I owned a mk2 Tuono when they first came out in 2006 but to be honest I didn't really get along too well with it, I think mainly because I've lived on a diet of inline 4's and found the twin a bit of an acquired taste.

However, since the V4 came out I've been giving it serious thought again and the updated 2014 bike sems to be getting good reviews.

However, I did wonder about a used V4, and possibley a non APRC model (mainly due to budget). So the question I have is is it worth buying a non APRC ? I know they obviosuly don't have the electronics package but do I need that for fast road riding ? I don't intend to do any track days and I have a 'comfy bike' for days out, 2 up and touring, so it will only be for me and 1 up rides.

I've seen a non APRC 2012 bike with less than 3k miles for just over £7000, which seems good value to me.

Would interested in your views, especially from anyone with a non APRC bike.

Cheers for reading.

Ian

I'd say it depends on how aggressive you want to ride and when. If you only ride conservatively on warm sunny days, you may not need it imo.

But just like ABS, the first time your butt/vehicle is saved by, essentially, a computer overide of your human input , you may find yourself thanking the digital Gods.

This bike is a handful. And it can be tempting to push it, it's so responsive, and crazy fast.

Maybe you don't really need "wheelie control" but on wet, even ice patched roads like we have here from now until May it's a lot more secure to ride in "R" mode. The coefficient of traction of that big smooth tire decreases quickly on wet. If you are used to conventional tires, it's an education, for sure. (I found). You can be down faster than you can say "oh s**t"

Dunno how much you save over the APRC, but I'd go for it if you really want to ride this bike anywhere near it's potential on the street. If you are planning track days, it might be even more worthwhile.

Personally I'd not get on this bike this time of year without being able to dial it back a notch.

cheers

for me the only thing i use is the quick shifter.turned off the anti wheelie and don,t trust the traction control and i class myself as a very quick rider .i too came from in line fours ,the sound of the v 4 is awesome.get one and u will not stop smiling.
its all in the wrist
cheers
bash

They are all extras, so the bike will work without them, but it is better with them. The quick shifter is the best feature in my opinion, but the anti wheelie and traction control are good rider aids.

A 2014 bike will cost you around 12k and it is around 10k for a slightly older aprc bike. You pays your money...

I'd go for a decent used older aprc spec bike if it was me. I got a new one for 10k at the end of the summer, so I'm sure prices of used bikes will drop a bit more over winter and with the new abs model available.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Are there any non APRC owners out there who have moved over to an APRC bike ? Or are more than happy with their bikes ?

Replied via the Af1 forum, as a non APRC owner there are not many "non APRC" owners about, it was only sold in EU and not abroad and I think all bikes are now APRC.

Yes saw your reply, thank you to you and the others for the response. Obviously you'll have seen my update on the 'other' forum.

I wasn't sure there were many non APRC owners out there and that I might be inundated with "don't buy a non APRC bike" replies from owners with APRC bikes.
As I said I'm not intending to do any track days and although I like to think I'm pretty swift on the road,(don't we all?!) I doubt I'd trouble the TC even if I had it.

Anyway, thanks again and if anyone else has any other thoughts please post them, but quickly as I'm thinking Thursday for a day out and a demo....weather permitting :)

Well there are plenty on RSV4's pre 2012 with out T/C

Why do I recognise your username? Previous SD owner on SD.net?

Haha...oh yeah...well you might be on to something, but if by SD you mean Super Duke ? Then no never had one, however, looking where you live, and if your surname is a colour, then I think we work for the same employer - In fact, we went out together in a group for a ride a few years ago, met at the petrol station Junc 5 M180/A15 and did a south bank loop, Wragby and round that way, you on an SD, me on a Blade....someone else on B/Bird ? Small world eh.....obviously if non of the above makes any sense to you then you're not who I think you are !! haha.

Ah yes Ian if I recall.

It's all ringing bells now :thumbup that was me. Sold the SD had a tuono for the summer then a year with out road bikes and progressed to Tuono V4 ownership, if my bike was road legal I would let you have you have a blat but its a full on track bike.....lovely bit of kit. Hopefully doing a few rounds of the No Limits race series next year against the sports bikes.

Ha yes thats me. Small world. I'm off at the mo but will e mail you over the weekend.

I rang the dealer this morning where the non APRC bike is to get some more details and basically sound him out re a poss deal and what sort of finance rate/deal he could do etc, with the intention of having a ride over tomorrow (to Carlisle) to have a look/demo, but the salesman seemed less than interested saying they wouldn't knock anything off and that was the price etc etc. I said I was 150 miles away but prepared to go over if there was deal to be done somewhere but he just said no, that weas the price. I asked about finance and the rate he quoted was quite high, but again he said that was rate, no movement. It was almost like "thats it, take it or leave it" !
I suppose I should admire his honesty but he just didn't seem bothered. And it was the way he was saying it, no banter, no laugh, just straight dead pan, he didn't asked for any of my details, didn't offer to ring me back or anything. Not very customer focused ! Makes you wonder if some of them want to sell bikes !

Ha very true, no worries Ian.

Yeah thats not amazing service.

Sure you know there are 3 dealers local (ish) one in Lincoln and two in Doncaster. There should be some good deals on the R version, but plenty of used bikes about with low miles....

It sounds like you might be fairly northern, so give Teasdale Motorcycles in Thirsk a try. Got mine there and the owner is spot on. I dealt with a few disinterested dealers like you describe before I got decent friendly service.

Hi,

Yes, I've been into Teasdale, had arranged a demo on a 2nd hand APRC but he sold it the day before I was due to go. He did seem like a gen bloke and took all my details and will hopeful ring me when he gets another. He has 2 on Ebay but neither are on his actual shop web site.

Hi guys Teesdes is my local dealer too. Andy the guy who runs it is a really nice guy, I bought a motor Guzzi from him last year. I too went to see 2 v4,s advertised on the net but when I got there did both been sold. Very genuine guy and he's always willing to move on the price. He's just taken on a new finance company at 3.9 APR!!!

Just to give you another veiw mate that nobody has mentioned yet, think about the resale value and
More importantly how desirable will a non aprc model be to someone else?
I just picked up a 2011 aprc with 3000 mile at 8 grand so to me not that much more than the one you have seen
At just over 7 grand. I would spend a little bit more now knowing you have got the best bit of kit instead of loving
The bike but wishing you had got an aprc version.
Good luck on your purchase which ever you choose

Hi,

Back on the forum, didn't buy before but looking again. Going for a demo this afternoon on a 14 plate. Any thing I should be looking out for ? Any problems arisen on the V4s since my last visit late 2013 ?

Cheers

Ian
