My Mille Hates Me.....please help....

Had my mille for 2 years now, and had been an absolute joy until early Dec when I decided to go for a blast.
The bikes was warming up as usual when suddenly all the lights on the dash went off and it died.
I tried switching the ignition back on and nothing, just the ticking noise (the same sound as when you re-connect the battery).
I left it afew hours, went back and it started, was running again, then cut out all over again...same thing.

I got my local Aprilia dealer to collect it the next week, they eventually said it was the rectifier and they changed it, as well giving it a much needed service and changed the throttle cables that were frayed.

I went to collect it yesterday and it was having problems starting, even on jump leads....I left it with them for another 3 hours, went back and it fired straight into life...perfect.
I stopped and filled up with petrol, and again, it fired straight up....

I went out to the garage today to start it, and same problem as early December, all lights on the dash went off and nothing would happen...I took the seat off, shook the battery gently, put it back in and it started, then cut off and shut down again..... this battery was a fuly charged one from yesterday.

Anyone have any idea? It has to be a loose connection somewhere right??:confused:confused

check the side stand switch ,or remove it even, assuming all yer battery connections are clean and tight.

Thanks mate... all connections are clean and tight, its been with Aprilia for a month and hoped they'd sorted it.
If it was the side stand switch would all the power cut out? lights everything....?

have a look at the large connector at the front left near the indicator

these often cause this type of issue with dirty contacts (it is where ignition and main feed go so lights starter etc)

id wonder why the shop fitted a new reg if the bike had no power ?

right enough the side stand switch would only kill the engine..

I could be a million miles away here but the symptoms you describe is as if you turned off the ignition switch ie you only get the clicking like you do when you re-connect the battery with the bike switched off & everything else is dead. Try checking the switch, wires & connectors from the ignition switch, you may have a broken wire that connects/disconnects when you turn the steering :dunno

Dodgy earth strap that connects to the main frame at the rear of the motor and is a pig to get to..... try running an extra earth strap to the subframe and see if that sorts it

Thanks for your help guys....I have checked all connections today, cleaned up the battery terminals and made sure the battery is FULLY charged....it burst into life and seemed perfect again.....

I dont have power in my garage, so has anyone tried the solar trickle chargers?
Alternatively will it be a problem to keep the battery in doors during the week over the next couple of months, make sure its fully charged and pop it in Saturday morning each week for the weekend rides......

However....should my battery really be loosing charge after just a few days? I have no alarm.....could anything else be sapping the power?

Thanks:dowhat

Ur battery has seen better days my friend, mine is exacctly the same and loses enough charge after a day off the battery conditioner..............so I'm just gonna leave it like that till the spring then get a motobatt for it.....they have agm tech for extra starting power

Personally I wpuld not keep a lead acid battery in the house purely because they give off toxic vapours and need good ventilation...if you have a shed or a similar covering nearby outside ur house run an extension lead to the charger .........much safer spesh if u got kids !!

this is worth a read on weather to go solar ? http://www.solarbatterychargerreview.net/

ive had batteries in the house many times but you need to put it on a solid floor on news paper hard mat etc if you use the work top make sure its away from any naked flame cooker etc and on a mat also (her in doors etc will moan either way) good luck lol

it will be a sealed maintenance free type so no prob with gas really but you must use a bike trickle charger as a car battery charger will boil it and destroy it.

as said the motobatt battery is a peach http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MotoBatt-...25?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2316f02051

:stupid ISTR it's Hydrogen ?

Also the stator replacement seems logical, if the battery isn't getting it's charge, it will give the symptoms described..

but we're not talking about the old car batteries with removable fillers on the top ?
those batteries were far more hazardous and should be charged outside as they bubble away emitting the gases which are explosive in confined spaces .

modern sealed 12v motorcycle batteries are ok as virtually no release and there charged with a 1.5 amp charge so very low charge rate

there would be a lot of issues with mobility scooters etc if you could not charge indoors ?

golf trolley batteries too all tend to get charged on the work top (well mine does) and it says on the chargers indoor use only.

just saying as not all people have a garage !!

and yes most batteries will settle to a fixed voltage after a short period ie after charge it gives say 13.6v so after 2 hrs it may read 12.9 etc

after a cold night it may drop to 12.6 but that should stay constant if the bat is ok (and thers no leakage parasitic drain etc)

I have just bought one of these Motobatt batteries at the weekend. Collected it from the shop. It does sit a bit higher than the battery I took out, a YTX14-BS. This means the plastic battery clip wont fit back on. Battery has performed well though.

Why did I take the YTx out? I know everyone loves these but I managed to flatten it and was unsure of its age. Still keeping it as a back up though, it's recharged just incase.

you can use a longer bolt and a spacer so the battery holder fits if you wanted :thumbup

Yes, i will try that. Might even put my YTX back in. It sits lower and the connections seem more secure. Two proper screw headed bolts instead of 4 small, fiddly allen head bolts. Didn't like that idea, especially having to fit the terminal to the battery with those crappy little bolts.

Hi Paul, i have my mille since October and it has only been out twice, like you i have no power in garage and opted for a solar charger ( 4w ) so far so good i have left it up to a fortnight and bike has started every time and garage is freezing (being in Scotland) when got bike battery was reading 12.6v when tested since using solar unit always at 13.9v when tested before i attempt to start. Dead simple size of laptop screwed onto roof ,hole in roof for cable, connected to bike and so far so good.

going on that a solar job is looking like a good investment :thumbup even in the UK

Thanks everyone for your help.... used the bike today and it was like a dream, as long as they battery is fully charged I have no probs, so I am super happy it doesn't seem to be an electrical issue, just the standard winter/aprilia/battery drama...

Thanks for the info on the solar charger....sounds like its the way to go.... :)
