Cheers guys:thumbup

This is ones of the biggest things a hate about twins, they are plagued with starting problems. Makes you seriously think about switching back to a Jap 4.

I just wanna a bike i can jump on and ride, not have to make sure it plugged into the optimate ever single day and not have to worry if the battery is in tip top condition, and if it aint it aint gonna start, worse still it could end up costing you mega bucks for the repair, After 4 years of ownership of it my enthusiasm for the v-twin is lessening

Have you had any horrible mechanical noise when starting the bike ?

no strange noises really mate just the usual been sound since ive had it but i thing the rain etc has finished it off,

Ritch dont let the darkside of the force draw you in, just wait til the sun comes out again and enjoy, Milleboy help is on its way, have you had new plugs in?

When you say spinning noise, do you mean just the starting motor or is it turning the engine over :confused

had all full service back in Feb when i had it ive probs done 1500 miles since then

its not that kind of sound bud where the spark plugs are fooked, its not acctually turning over its just like spinning

Ooo eerr

Not sure if your getting the engine turn over or not or if it's just the starter motor spinning by the description. if your not sure you can normally tell by putting you hand over the exhaust and feel for compression pulses when it's turning over.

there are too many variables at the moment. you need to establish what it's actually doing. could be mechanical ,electrical or fuel at this point.

Milleboy,

firstly as Spoonz says,

You say starting has got worse and worse, do you mean the engine is turning over slower and slower each time you've tried to start it? That would point to duff battery. How do you know your battery is good? Put the battery on charge and try again. It's a process of elimination.

The spinning sound you hear, could it be a series a very quick clicking noises?

the engine isnt acctually turning over

another point is its turns once then nothing, once i retry its spinning again

try once nothing but spinning no engine turn over

try twice spins once then stops no noise at all

try three times its spinning and a slight engine turn over

try four times still spinning but a bit more engine turn

and fifth time it spins engine turns and finnally fires up

Whats th plan for tomorrow if you can't get it running. is the course class room based or rider based.
Check all connections battery, solinoid, starter. then if no change jump leads from the car to the bike. live on the + terminal on bike battery, Negative on to the foot peg or frame not - Terminal.
Clean or replace plugs.
check fuel level

milleboy
good luck with tis one
i'm still trying to get mine 100%
i've come to the conclusion that i will keep replacing bits until its fixed
starting with starter relay - swapping for a yam one
then rectifier
then generator

hope we both get a result without costing the earth

Cheers dude

Ive heard a few people that have brought the replacement Yammy part, just wondering whats the symptons to this part going wrong?

From all the threads on here regarding starting over the past few months, it sounds to me to be a bad electrical connection. one of the other lads will tell you where to find the connections but i wouldn't mind betting thats what it turns out to be.
heres keeping me fingers crossed for you.:thumbup

cheers buddy, im hoping i just got water in the connection coz i washed the bike last night and proper went to town on it lol so i might of got carried away with the hose pipe, if its just a matter of wiggling something ill be over the moon "wishfull thinking"

Hi Chris. The symptoms on mine with the starter relay on the way out was progressively "lazy" starting, with the occasional nothing at all coming from a press of the starter. Good old turn off, turn on and it would normally finally find its way to starting.

Eventually however, it just did nothing, sod all other than a single "click" when pushing the starter button. That and the sound of the fuel pump. I thought it was battery time, so went and got myself an uprated one, promptly fitted it, pressed the button......."click" My I was pleased it went............. "click" :rant

So, decided to have a play with the relay, and in my haste didn't disconnect the battery, bridged across the relay with the spanner undoing one of the nuts :jack and a good little spark show was accompanied by the starter turning. **** and testicles :nana

If it is the relay, grab yourself the Yamaha one as mine now starts better than it ever has, no laziness about it :thumbup

Mr Cat that sounds very similiar to how mine is along with something else or maybe its just a super fooked one maybe that will be my first avenue of solving the problem

Do you get them from a main Yam Dealer and im sure i read somewhere that there 20ish squid?

I got mine from a local motorbike shop as they said next day, the Yamaha dealer said 4 days "and we don't open on Mondays" :jack

Mine was around 27 including the dreaded from memory squire.
