Misfiring When Hot

I have a 2009 RSV1000R, and it has developed what seems like a misfire above 6,000rpm, but this only happens when it's hot and done several miles (50 or so continuous, sometimes more). If I stop for a break, it will fix the problem for a little while before it starts playing-up again. Any ideas? Thanks.

could be an ignition coil breaking down.

I've thought about that, but they usually misbehave all the time, rather than intermitedly...although you could be right, of course. Bur my bike's only done 16,000 miles.

I was wondering if it could be a split fuel hose inside the tank, thus losing pressure, as I've heard this is quite a common fault?

coil pack.. my experience tells me breakdown when hot is pretty common as first part of failure.

indeed, it is normally a tiny break in a wire inside, when it gets hot the coils expand and open the break, when they cool again the contract making the circuit again.

no need to be too fussy about choice of coils, pretty much anything that looks like it will fit would do the job for you.

Has anyone noticed that our bikes have 2 coils?? One per cylinder.. newer vehicles get coil on plug technology, so no spark leads are needed. On a normal 4cyl this is not something easy to retrofit, because a pair of coils are shared for the 4 cylinders.. but our bikes having a coil per bank should mean we can use coil on plug units and take the existing coil wiring straight to the COP modules and away we go..

Is this commonly known and done? Advantages are usually a stronger spark, neater wiring in the bay, no leads to fail etc.

One or two of us have played around with coils on a stick , I have a set from a ZX10R on Frankie at the moment (not a good fit but had to make up some foam spacers to hold them in). Results well purely non technical but seems to start easier, runs a bit leaner at lower revs and would seem on the face of it to not justify the expense (unless you can get them at the right price)

Love this place!! instant diagnostics, I am just off the bike after riding it to work and its developed a misfire. Its happened once before about a week ago and I thought it was because the bike got soaked in a heavy rain shower while one the motorway so thought water ingress some where. Now I'm starting to put the clues together. It only happened when the bike got our of heavy traffic and the temp was about 81 degrees. It get worse as the temp heads to 90 degrees. Just got the rocker cover gasket replaced a day ago so while I was getting that done I asked the mechanic to check all the contacts and use contact cleaner to drive out what I thought was moisture.

But reading here now it seems its the coil pack. The bike is 03 RSV Milie and up on till this point it ran like a top. Is there any other possibilities that I need to keep an eye on?

Hi Guys,

I am facing the same issue but only at about 3-3.5k rpm or around the speed of 100-110kmh. I am not sure what is causing it, it becomes worst when engine tempreture is above 90C...

As a work around (which I do not prefer) I tend to ride with above 4k rpm or lower than 3k rpm...

Check dash voltage when running in case you have a stator issue.

If ok (13.5v and above), look closely at the fuel delivery, as in hoses in tank and especially the fuel pump which is a known failure point. ( motor gets hot, slows and cannot deliver enough fuel above 6k. Some later Gen2 used a weak Chinese fuel pump).

There was also a recall for tank hoses on some late Gen2 models which developed pin holes or came loose. symptoms were fueling issues on part filled tanks, generally ok on a full tank.
