Mille starting problem

T

the turner

Can anyone offer advice. I've got a 2000 mille and sometimes when I press the starter, it only just manages to turn the engine over. Next press and it either does same again or it turns it over properly and starts up. It's intermittent and the battery's always on optimate charger. Is this a bad connection or bad battery or summat worse.

I've got the same problem on an 03 never actually failed to start but worrying when it happens, ever tried to bump start one  I will be interested to find a solution as well.

I haven't had any problem since I upgraded my battery with a super oversized one 16ah with xtra cold crank amps. And thanks to rsv-twin for the selonoid and oz Mille for the dzus ' and baby Jesus for Christmas

Thanks all for the replies. I think I'll get the Yamaha solenoid and try that.

which battery would that be?

do the solenoid/battery mods and get rid of the brown connector while your at it.....check the how to thread for it

Not sure which battery superyellow has, i changed mine from YTX12BS to YTX14BS, it is 15mm higher but still fits and 12ah opposed to 10ah and has 200cca opposed to 180cca's. Would be interested to know which one he has though, I work for a Yuasa distributor and cant seem to see anything in the catalogue that would physically fit?

well, superyellow said that he has a 16 Ah battery on his bike. on my 2000.5 12 ah is stock. if i leave it for two days it sometimes fails to start on the first push. actually, most times. tacho resets, the fuel pump is starting again, the clock resets, etc. the battery is almost new, 7 months old and i put it at least once a week on a smart charger (saito ProCharger, similar to the optimate). i managed to f*ck my sprag in the meantime but it didn't show any sign of going dead, it just wouldn't engage one day at all, no part-time engaging or crunching sounds... weird. anyway, i'm going to get rid of the brown connector, put an extra earth wire, uprated solenoid (or is it relay) and, if i find out wich 16 Ah battery superyellow has i'll get one too. hopefully my new sprag will live happily everafter :))

I had a similar problem and it buggered me up for a couple of weeks. I changed the solenoid and even threw a temper at my Optimate. I apologised to it later when it helped me finally discover the problem wasn't the solenoid, starter motor or dodgy/faulty cables, it turned out to be a knackered cell in the battery after all. I now have a Varta YTX14-BS battery and she kicks over first time everytime. Now I am much happier.

hmmm... i haven't thought about a broken cell, my ProCharger has a battery fault indicator and dosen't seem to find the battery in a poor state. i will however take the battery to a battery service just out of curiosity.

Hi guys
This is my very first post. There is some great info on this site. It rocks!
I just bought a 01 RSV R last week. Previous owner neglected it so much its a crime. All the carbon is gone off (****** yellow colour) and half the decals are missing.

But she'll be beautiful again once I've started :)

I think I'll do the battery solenoid mod first as mine is hard to start without a jump pack. Which model Yamaha solenoid do ye use.
Cheers

Yamaha Part number is 4KD81940-00 about £30 from any Yamaha dealer

clean the earth leads from the battery to the frame.did mine and it worked for me.
