Lads I'm at the crossroads of my middle-age cris... er, I mean motorcycling career.... I traded a BMW FGS in for the Tuono back in April (good month to buy and Aprilia) and now find myself missing the occasional off road adventure tremendously. What's worse, a group of Adventure nutters has popped up in the area and does a weekend romp through the woods almost every weekend. I've been getting the urge for another BMW (this time an 800 rather than a 700) or, thanks to a test ride this weekend, a Tiger 800 XC. The tiger blew my socks off and tripled my sperm count, and now I have three , and handled the street amazingly and this little off road diversion into a construction site (was not supposed to do that) like a pet... tiger...
I made another unfortunate move recently, as my Sprint GT was in the need of some work and was aging, I traded it in for a conservative BMW F800GT, pseudo-sports tourer two weeks ago. I would have rather traded the Sprint in for the Tiger but I didn't get bit by the dirt bug as bad at the time and needed a daily commuter to go with my Tuono and balance out the fuel consumption, etc. The Triumph dealer I rode into on Saturday made me a good trade in deal for the Tuono, as that's what I rode up in, but we did not discuss the BMW as a trade in and it likely wouldn't get me as much. I love the Tuono but want to go off road again (the Tiger tours brilliantly as well), and don't want to be that murdered on trade in loss... However, that would mean A) sacrificing the Tuono, and B) having 2 less than one liter bikes that are both somewhat conservative....
My friend who loves my Tuono says I'm being a cheap-arse and should bite the bullet on the BMW and trade that in and keep the T which balances nicely off the Tiger. I should say I was made a ridiculous deal on the Tiger aside from the trade in value. The unfortunate reality though, is that I never got a chance to take the T to a track (this year at least), and it's pretty hard to open her up around here with all the traffic and the cops. The speed I do in the twisties can easily be done by the BMW which handles very well in that environment. So I'm trying to justify keeping the T over the Bmer, given the extra funds I would need, and also considering the Bmer has heated grips, wind protection, luggage, and is very commuter friendly.
I really need some dirt and would like something to take those trips on north on where I could then just pop off road on one of the numerous trails. But at the expense of the T? Ugh... The T being naked as she is likely will not be used as much when the weather gets colder whereas both the BMW and Tiger are pretty bad weather friendly... However, the T shines in the summer (no pun intended) due to its nakedness and, believer it or not, less engine heat by the legs.
I'm torn. I could just leave everything as is and kiss dirt goodbye (which stains the lips), and tour less as the Bmer is as buzzy as a bee hive and makes you nuts after a half hour, or trade the bmer in and have the Yin/Yang balance between sport and ADV, or do the more financially feasible thing and trade the Tuono in and have two versatile, practical bikes..... ah, what to do.. if I don't do track I sort of see the T going to waste in a way. Again, the bmer handles pretty well so although it doesn't hold its line as well in a turn it's very flickable and handles the twisties just fine. Turn the T into a commuter bike? ???:crazy
