If you have an early mille and would to have the wind deflectors installed, well you can. Its not that difficult. You just got to have a little bit of faith in your self as it involves drilling your front cowling

First hole I drilled was the bottom of the two top ones.
The measurement from the end of the bottom ridge to the hole highlighted below is 1.7cm along. The hole is just on the top of the ridge.

The top hole was a little trickier to measure. From the top ridge I measured from the bottom line in a straight line 1.3cm then dropped it the mark down 0.5cm. this then gave the centre hole.

You may find it easy to drill the first hole and bolt it on. Mark up the second and the two bottom holes.

Made sure this was ok by bolting the ear back on and checking the top mark lines up with the top hole. It did with both top holes done, I bolted them in place. Make sure you bolt them like you have finished as it helps to pull the WD close to the cowling and it be flusher over the ridge.

The two bottom holes I found easy. The gap between the WD and the cowl at the bottom, where the air would go through measured 1.3cm as its lowest point.
Under the cowl where it joins the air intake, the WD should line up along the join line. You know what I mean when you look under it. You will notice that the bolt hole at the front underneath does not sit flush. This is because the 99-00 is more rounded than and not as flat as the 01 model. When you bolt this one on it all pulls together to get a good fit so don’t worry.

Just remember you will need to take of the side fairings and the air intake off to be able to bolt the bottom holes up.

They deflect the air over your little fingers to give you 0.012mph extra top end. Better than that, they're cool!
And if yours is an 01 then you should have them anyway.

Mine is an 01 and the deflectors are missing, but i think i can live without them after being told what they do.
my bike is tatty as **** and half the bolts that hold the plastcs on are ones that ive spoached for in my odd bolts box. irate

Garvey, can you expand a bit further on the location of the bottom holes?. Any pictures of their actual location?. I've just sized up my fairing on my 2000 model with a pair of deflectors I got from a member here and when I place the deflector in position going by your top measurements, the bottom holes and indeed the bottom of the deflector are absolutely nowhere near where yours look to be in your pictures. The bottom of my deflectors are still sitting on the front of the top nose fairing unless I really, really push on them and force them underneath. Am I in the ball park here or what am I doing wrong?.

I would love to dude but I do not have the bike anymore. If I remember right, because the ears are not designed for the bike, I have to pull them around a little.

Okeydoke m8, cheers. I'm assuming as long as I get the top holes measured out right, then bolt the ears in place that I just need to then pull down on the ear itself until its sitting in the right place and then mark, drill and bolt the bottom ones?. I.E. - The top ones if in the right location should mean that it sits pretty much where it should do on the fairing?.

I thought I'd post this info in your sticky thread m8, in case other folk were looking for info on how to carry out this mod. Hope that's ok?. :confused

Finally got round to fitting the set of carbon ear deflectors on my first gen RSV, 2000MY. They are genuine carbon deflectors which were cosmetically damaged and a bit beyond recovery by wet and dry sanding and laquering. So I decided to carbon wrap them using 3M adhesive carbon textured wrap. Turned out pretty well although they obviously look different to the rest of the real carbon I have on the bike. Still, was a cheap way to do it.

They won't be to everyone's taste, some folk prefer the "cleaner" look of the early Mille's, but I'm quite pleased with the looks and how it turned out. Took longer than I thought, measuring the holes and getting the deflectors to line up the same on each side took a lot of patience ( and swearing :lol: ). I was skidding myself to actually start drilling the holes in the fairing but it wasn't too traumatising in the end.

I followed Garvey's guide above, sort of, but my measurements were slightly different to his. It seems easiest to me if you measure the bottom holes and mark them then drill them. Then offer the ears up to the fairing and fit them using first of all, one single fairing screw and then a second on the bottom part of the ear deflectors.

Once you have them sitting pretty well lined up, press the top of the deflectors inwards and line them up so they sit nice and even. Then mark the two top holes, drill them and again, offer up the ear deflectors and fit the screws. Don't worry if you are a few mm out here and there, its fairly easy to adjust the deflectors and tighten each screw at different rates if you need to do so to adjust them in tiny amounts.

Once tightened up, the deflectors are "drawn" into the top fairing just like Garvey said so despite the early RSV top fairing being a rounder shape compared to later models, the ear deflectors do indeed fit even though at first they seem like there's no danger of you getting them to sit on there in the right position.

Anyway, pictures of the finished article. As I said, some folk may not like them but different strokes for different folks, eh??!!! :-
