Immob ECU not starting

Ive got an RSV Mille R and i have had problems with intermittent starting. At first i thought it was the Meta after market alarm but since have had an engineer remove and bypass it. Still got the fault.

Turn the key, everything works fine but nothing happens when the start button is pressed. No dimming lights - battery is fine. Start switch seems okay, tilt switch fine. No dimming of the lights, the only strange thing is the fuel pump does prime when it doesnt start. I cant help but think the fault lies with the Aprilia built-in ECU immobiliser. It doesn't seem to de-energise. When it does de-energise the bike runs as normal. Its never cut out or anything. But then when it decides to, it'll just not start!!!? When all is okay and the ignition is on there is a little red key light on the dash flashing and a slight (relay type) click sound from the ECU area and all is okay. When the bike wont start, the red key light on the dash takes a few more seconds to come on and the 'click' noise doesnt occur.:rant

Ive shorted out the solenoid and it cranks fine. Just no start!!! All fuses okay, swapped all relays round and the problem has been passed on having changed the relays. Ive even changed the battery as a matter of course...

I have ordered a new ECU Immobiliser @ £220 : ( Getting pretty desperate now............

Mate, speak with Griff (fusebox) about it. My immob packed up while riding last year on my return from Switz trip. Stranded on motorway, 7 hours later the AA got me back home:angry
Turned out to be immob, and as it is not an insurance approved item, Griff told me which wire to cut and re-connect to bypass it.
It would not be right of me to publish on here what to do, so i will leave it to you to call Griff.

dude, i stripped mine down and re soldered connections, if your bike is a 04 new shape it sounds like immob, a think theres being few threads on ecu immob

I did strip this down. It took me about 4 straight hours to get all the foam off the board and i still could not see anything wrong!!? Ordered a new one but im hoping to god its not going to be £220 down the drain

As buffalo says, check the white connectors above the immobiliser behind the left inner fairing panel. They are prone to corroding and causing intermittent faults

Yeah done that too guys. WD'd all the connections on the bike (that i can see) and used Vaseline on the ones that are out in the open and prone to moisture.... Still did nothing though. Thing is, i'm told that parts from Aprilia are going to take weeks to arrive now : (

The immobilisor can be bypassed in the interim but by your description there is a possibility it could be the antenna that has a problem. That forms part of the ignition switch and reads the key chip.

The red light on the dash depending on what it does gives an error reading. On solid means key not recognised/ can't read it and and flashing means key code memory blank i think from memory.
It could still be the immob but just a heads up that i'm not 100% that's the case.

Where is the antenna located then...? Is that not part and parcel of the Immobiliser ECU..?

Do i have to re-program the ECU to my keys too...? Does anyone have any info on this or and how to do's please.......?

Cheers

The Antenna is attached to the ignition switch and reads the key chip and passes the code from the key to the immobilisor. The distance between key and ecu is too great for there not to be an antenna. It's a bit like an ariel on your telly in function. No antenna no signal.

Your problem sounds like either the Antenna doesn't always read the key or the immobilisor is suspect and doesn't do what it should with the info.
I'm just making you aware that the light errors you have are key code related so might not be the immob itself.

Yes you will have to reprogram the ecu to your keys. Although a blank ecu will not stop the bike from starting i beleive, so you can use it until it's programmed.

For when you get your new immobilisor

STORING NEW KEY CODES (VIRGIN MEMORY)

When the immobilizer ECU is first powered up, its memory is
virgin and the led stays on without flashing. To store the first
two key codes :
- run a key ON cycle with the first key: the led will switch
off for 0.5 sec and turn on again. When it turns on, turn
the key to OFF.
- turn the second key supplied to ON within 20 seconds.
The led will switch off and immediately flash 4 times.
Now turn the key to OFF. The two keys are now stored and
the immobilizer is activated (led flashes every 3 seconds as
a warning).
The two keys are now stored and the immobilizer is activated
whenever the key is turned to OFF (led flashes every 3 seconds
as a warning)
If power fails after the first key is stored, the system will reset
(first key data also cancelled). After the first key has been
stored, all vehicle and dashboard’s functions are enabled.
The key is not stored definitively if the second key is not
stored within 20 seconds.

Thats a big big help cheers spoonz. Just got my fingers crossed its the ECU Immob!!!

Having said that Griff has just said i need a blue key to do the re-config of the keys....?

Griff may know better but my understanding is the master key is needed for adding additional keys (up to 4) to existing (programmed) ecu's or when erasing the ecu if it's going on a different bike with different key codes.

Because a new ecu is Virgin it automatically goes into learn mode on power up and doesn't therefore need a key. It stays in learn mode until at least 2 keys are programmed.

If your buying a used Ecu then yes you will need a master key.

That's my interpretation of the manual at least.
