Hi guys, Im dripping abit of coolant from here, its gradually got worse, to the point where i notice a patch in the garage, is it a common fault on these?

What part do I need to replace? I dont even know what that cylinder type thing with the rusty cap is!

Heres a pic:

Hi

Biglad's right - it is the thermal expansion valve (thermostat to most of us) that appears corroded. I'm no authority, but I would have thought a part designed to have coolant running through it continually wouldn't leak, except maybe from where the coolant pipes are attached. There is a test procedure in the workshop manual, but only for the temperature when the valve starts to open and is fully open. If it is the valve itself that is leaking then replacement should fix the issue. Aprilia also say that you shouldn't use screw-type clamps but rather their single use type - not sure if it really matters, though...

Hi mate, i'd say your best bet would be to wipe all leaked coolant away and start it up and see if you can spot the bit it is leaking from. If i had to take a guess i would probably go with the pipe leaking as opposed to the actual thermostat leaking. Does it have the 'single use clamp' still fitted ? If it does, from what i've seen on mine, these are very good and it shouldnt be leaking. Running it should show you whether or not its the pipe leaking. worse case scenario ... remove thermostat ... clean the ends of thermostat up and make sure the ends of the hoses are nice and square (and clean of crud inside) then put it back together (i'd suggest 'mikalor' worm drive clamps. narrow, smooth underside and chamfered edges so as not to cut into the hoses) ... not tightening the clamps too much or too little. As dghughes mentioned, i'm not sure about the importance of using their single use clamps, i cant see any reason to use them other than to keep their profits up !
let us know how you get on !

Smithy is spot on mate, my money is on the pipe or joint, i took of the single use clamps and fitted S/Steel jubilee clips without any problems.

I doubt the housing for the thermostat will be the problem, BTW i take it those clip ons are no good to you?

Its already been fitted with a jubilee clip so looks like its the thermostat,

Hi Badger I was after some clip-ons slightly longer than stock, stock feel quite restrictive to me, wanted alittle more leverage.

measure the jubilee clip width mate. i removed the exact same jubilee on mine reccently and was going to fit a new one, i found the 'jubilee' brand were too wide (13mm if i remember correctly) and the clip was overlapping the fitting ridged lip ... so i sourced some proper clips which were only 9mm wide and smooth bottomed. i'd still remove it and just check, either way it needs to come off. if possible could you photograph the leaking part, mine isnt leaking but the outer part of the thermostat is lookin a lil' rough also so should check if mine will be a problem ...

I know this is heresy to most members of this forum, but I'm a fan of the standard CLIC clips. In their favour:
1) The instalation tool is cheap (from Halfords).
2) CLIC clamps are cheap (if not sourced through Aprilia)
3) They're very quick to install.
4) They tighten to the designed level every time (whether or not this is enough is another matter).

It pays to remember that these are designed for non-specialist assembler staff on a production line - fit, click, job done!

FWIW, I got a set of Mikalor (from Demon Tweeks) for the oil/coolant unions when I got the bike, but so far haven't fitted any of them.

BRG, i love the mikalor clamps. designed specifically for clamping rubber/silicone hose. they dont bite into the hose are smooth and chamfered and can be used over and over again. never considered the single use clips as ive never really come across them before ... hmm
