I need new Front Brake Disks. Any recomendations?

I went to Southern Cross on Saturday and they serviced my 2001 Mille (Gasboy's old blue one)

One of the things wrong was that the head bearings were fecked, so changed for needle bearing versions.

But the front breaks are really bad. They judder and are generally not good, they took it for a test ride and said they were dangerous !

So i need a new pair and have no idea what to get. The current ones are the "wavey" type. So i wanted to keep the same style to match the back breaks (Which are fine)

Any suggestions as to what type and where to get them would be great

Personally i'd go with the genuine Aprilia Brembo discs as i'm not a fan off wavy discs as they are really only for show and the performace advantages are very minimal under extreme braking condititons. They are also expensive at around £350 per set plus the correct pads. If you go with the wavy discs go with either Galpher or Braking

Here' a set of genuine Aprilia discs that are a good price

You will need new pads too. The Ferodo Sintergrip road pads are as good as any and cheaper than the Brembo's at around £30 per caliper. See RSVR.net

I loved the 'hiss'that the oe brembos make and they brake well, tho they do warp.
I like the galfers on mine now, not so strong at low speed with initial bite, but recently grabbing the lever at high speed in Europe the braking was FANTASTIC..and they look awesome to.
So.. Galfer, Braking or OE brembos and you cant go wrong.
cheers Ck

agree with ck my aftermarkets are quite notchy on soft braking around town but on hardbraking on the boil they are awsome

My bike had cheapo wavey disks on when i got it and they warped badley.
Put EBC prolite on and one finger braking with nice feel now there bedded in, good brakes cost money so dont go for the cheapest :thumbup

Thanks for all the advice guys. Would disks from a Aprilia 2007 RSV Factory fit my 2001 RSV Mille ?

Jacko,

Get some piccies in your garage mate and stick with the standard fitment discs, they can cope with anything us mortals can throw at them.

I have a blue RSV and am looking for fellow blue riders.

Blue ones are faster you know!!!

ok, i will have to get some pics soon. Gasboy must have some of his "old" bike ;-)

As for the disks, i checked out the ebay link that Legs posted and said would fit.

RS125 E2 - E3 2006 - 2008
RSV1000 Mille 2001 - 2008
RSV1000 Tuono 2002 - 2008
Shiver 750 2007
Mana 850 2007 - 2008
Pegaso Strada (Trail) 650 2005 - 2007

But i found this and Gasboy says they wont fit, but they seem to be the same, or am i wrong? The only difference is the price !

That Ebay add is complete *****, the brakes on the RSV 2001 - 2008 is radically different.

Step away from this one, the seller hasn't got a clue what they have and all you will do is waste money on P & P when you have to return the discs.

Like all the other posts said, go to a good site such as Demon Bikes/Tweeks and get the best ones you can afford or the OE discs.

I always go with OE discs and have never had a problem, brakes are the one thing you can't afford to mess up on.

I had PFM supersport discs on my old SRAD, they rust a bit but they are awesome and you definitely won't warp them.

Hve you tried cleaning the buttons? Alot of times that helps. Also, a little trick you can do is bend back the tabs on the buttons and that will make your rotors full floating. If both of these don't work,.... time for new ones!

The discs will fit whether of a radial braked bike or not, first thing to do is make suer the bobbins are spinning freely before you spend any money on discs, if they are not free this will give a warping feel to your brakes.

I have checked and the "bobbins" are solid and won't move at all. I have got them to move by putting a nut and bolt through them and using a spanner to move them round with WD40. After they nearly move by hand but still not spinning free. I am sure the circlips that hold the bobins in are way to tight.

Should i take them off and bend the circliips a bit so they are not so tight and alow the bobbins to spin?

Cheers

Spay some brake cleaner on the bobbins to remove the brake dust, then keep trying to turn using the WD40. A little stepper drill and a small bit of rag is a good method too.

Use the WD40 only liberally though as you don't want to contaminate the pads. Remove all traces of the WD from the disc surface too once you've finished

Good man Legs !

I got the exact disks you recommended. £170 for both and they are brand new also able to move the bobbin's with my hand (unlike the old discs)
Fitted them today with Gasboy reusing the old pads and all the vibration is now gone, the brakes are really good.

So it seems that the bobbins must move by hand and allow the disc to move slightly or you get vibrations.

I will look at the old Wavey Disks and see if i can loosen up the bobbins.

Thanks for the good advice mate ! :thumbup
