Horrible feeling the sprag is screwed!

Ive had a few problems recently with low battery and knackered starter solenoid so replaced all aswell as new plugs. It started straight away so left it on trickle charge.
Today, 2 days later its not starting and i can hear a crappy noise coming from the front right side (i think) of bike. It sounds like gears are worn and not engageing properly hense having a sound like a bag of nails when trying to start. Could this possibly be the starter motor gears screwed and making this sound or is it the dreaded sprag clutch thAT has failed?
Cheers

Could be mate more.likely its the sprag but I've had a starter eat its insides before and that doesn't sound too.clever either. Sprag is easy to do just be methodical. I believe the Sprag itself has been sourced from ktm for around 40 quid

Sounds like it could be dude, and it's BMW for the sprag and a little bit more than that fella but not hurrendous like genuine aprilia stuff!
Takes about 2.5 hrs in a well equipped workshop!
Hope this helps

Griff

Deffo seen a ktm part, perhaps it was on the af1 site. Can use their caliber seals too for our brembos ;-)

This maybe something new then, but as a minimum I would want to use a genuine rotax part for any aprilia engine .......bit like fitting fiat cam belts to your ducati 999r ,yes they fit but would you use em?

Errr no! Not worth it!

Errr yes ! Well worth it!

Why replace a problem item with another problem item.
Companies around the world survive by offering improved parts over the OEM equivalent .

Well you fill yer boots mate! Seen it go wrong too many times with pattern parts, or that'll do ! I watched phase one endurance team pack up and leave after 5 hours because of pattern parts.......

Btw!
The aprilia sprag isn't actually that bad, the unit breaking is usually symptom
Of ill treatment, if the battery isn't fully charged or replaced with a better one with a better cold cranking output it really batters the sprag trying to start with low voltage, if the bike is used every day there's rarely a problem!

So the oe part in this instance is actually pretty good! Expensive from aprilia ,bit pretty good!

Hope this helps lads!

This really helps , thx..
Im very sure i dont have the correct equipment so would it be wise taking it to an aprilia dealer to repair? What sort of price would i be looking at for the complete job at a dealer? Im also working alot of hours so cant really see me even being able to have the time to even attempt it.

Also .....
Do you think there is a possibility that it could be the starter motor gears making the noise? I can hear the starter when pressing ignition, bike turns over a couple of times, then its makes the crappy noise and a buzzing sound.
The bike did start once. Could this mean there are a few teeth on the cogs of starter motor that picked up and started it? or am i chatting bollocks as per usual???? :coocoo :O

Cool! Glad it helps!

Tbh honest your local bike shop should be able to carry out that for you!
It's just a proper fiddle getting flywheel off, I reckon on about 2- 2.5 hours to do it properly in a workshop, theres loadsa great info on forums on how to do this job if there's any doubt!
If you let me know where you are I might even be able to recommend somewhere?

Any questions I'm happy to help just post here or send me an email [email protected]

Cheers

Griff

Im in the bedfordshire area, Luton area. Not sure if you are local so i suppose its a bit of a long shot if you will know of anyone in my area to do the job. Would really appreciate it if you do tho buddy, be a great help.
Just spotted your web address, ill see where you are now.

I doubt it's as bad as that dude, the starter gears are usually pretty resilient.

It's does sound like there maybe a power supply problem as well, this probaly caused the prib in the first place, but it's really difficult to diagnose via email.

I'm only an hour away from you lad , gimme a call in the morning if you like? I can hopefully be a bit more accurate?

Cheers

Griff

I did have a power issue, (crappy battery and solenoid) and after looking thro the threads on here i think i could have caused the problem with trying to turn it over to often with not enough power..
Managed to get someone to pick it up for repair today. will keep you informed on the outcome. Griff thanks for ya help mate, its really appreciated. :thumbup

My 06 has nearly 43,000 on now, and (touch wood) have had no sprag problems, but the bikes used regularly (hence mileage) always have it on the optimate, the batteries original and same with the starter solenoid which is still the 50ma item..

Thinking of getting a new battery though with the age and last two really cold winters..

mate, if you are within a viable travelling distance of tamworth, get griffer to do it, he's too modest to admit it but he's god when it comes to aprilias!

ok ive now had my bike in Palmers aprilia dealership in hemel hempstead herts since monday 7th feb 11 and i cant belive it takes this long! Before palmers dealership got it i had sent it to onyerbike in aylesbury and they couldnt even find the problem!!!! i mean how experienced are these bloody technicians in these workshops?!?!?
Palmers didnt even look at my bike untill 4 days after it getting delivered to them and its now feb 16th and ive been told the parts are STILL not in! i find this absolutly disgusting as i went to these people because they specialise in this bike, all i get is fob offs ffs. I would have been better driving it up to Griff an hour away, getting a hotel and waiting as i use this bike for work and its costing me an arm and a leg in taxis due to the friggin useless dealers bullshitting me.
The point of this post is ....... DONT USE ONYERBIKE AYLESBURY or PALMERS OF HEMEL HEMPSTEAD FOR GOOD SERVICE ..you wont get it !

You wait till you get the bill. The Aprilia sprag parts are not cheap. You should have used Griff as the BMW sprag he uses is half the price and you likely would have done a weeks riding by now since fixing it.

There are a few good Aprilia dealers around but many are just pants, stack em high sell em cheap merchants. great for a cheap bike, crap to fix it. Your best bet would have been Sourthern Cross if you couldn't get to Griff.

I did get a quote and YES its high..we are talking £550 ffs hence why im friggin annoyed at the ****** service im getting. Im sure i could have done the job myself had i the tools and time, im beginning to think i would have been better off doing it myself.

Holy sheeeeet

I think Griff does it for about £260 - £270. Is it too late to pull it out and get it done by someone else ?

yes bruv too late to pull out now and ive been waiting for nearly 2 bloody weeks so id be a **** to pull it out now. Im just gonna slag em off on my website and others, it really makes me sick to the stomac how they can take the piss like they do. The aylesbury onyerbike are just as bad....they charge £200 to change a battery and plugs ffs and that price included 2, YES 2 technicians to do that ! shocking ! i just cant wait to go and collect it now and have a very nice chat with the manager to put as many FU*Ks into him as i can in 30 seconds, hes gonna regret pissing me about.......I am usually a nice good natured man lol ....oh well
