Hi Peeps,
Seriously thinking about getting a V4 Tuono. Any serious niggles to look out for?
Background is Jap 4's, mainly due to getting me and the Mrs round Europe for the last twenty odd years. On my third ZZR1400 now and try to get to the Alp's or Eifel's a couple of times a year. Always had a blade or R1 for one-up local work, got rid of the last R1 in 2013 as I just wasn't using it (mainly because I'm pushing 50 :no) and it was getting uncomfortable. Hence the reason for looking at the Tuono, wanted something more comfortable but with a bit of waft, and character :thumbup. Looking to go to the Harz Mountains next May, how are they for a couple of thousand miles in a long weekend - or should I stick to the 14 for any sort of distance?
All the riding on the Tuono will be without a pillion.
Any information or comments much appreciated :thumbup

Hi

I'm over 50 now & was suffering from sore wrists and aching back with a CBR...so as a retirement present to me treated myself to a new TV4R, did a few test rides on alternatives but always came back to the T, such a a lot of character its so different to all the Jap4's and 3's & Ducati's i've ever had, great sound, great toys, great performance & handling & I love the looks, I've done some long runs although nothing like you and I find it really comfortable, difficult for a pillion though & my short legged wife has given up! , the dealer network is not great although I have a reasonable local dealer who are great, I've heard a few horror stories about customer service and warranty claims.....I haven't regretted buying it for a minute....You need to test ride one!

Handle and comfortable, I have a 2003 rsv, short or long runs and sounds great.

Thanks for the replies, especially Old Git - as with you the riding position, not the size, of the R1 was the problem. Not the best time of year to take a test ride but I've found a couple in local-ish dealers.
I've read a couple of comments about gearbox problems, is that a specific year or model problem? Also rear brake issue?
I'm taking my time to get the right bike but the Tuono V4 is still looking good.
Thanks again, Russ

One think with the V4 the tank range is very short, especially compared to the ZZR your looking maybe 80-90 miles before the light comes on. 2014 models onwards do have a slightly bigger tank, but not sure how much extra range.
But once your in the twisties I can not think of a better bike to have, wake up the mountains with the noise of a V4 :biggrin

Hi peeps,
Been doing a bit more research and reading up on the V4, there seems there can be a problem with the dogs on several (or all) of the gears. They seem to be too soft and are rounding off which is leading to false neutrals and some gears slipping out under acceleration, also some problems with some clutches and neutral selection. This has been reported at mileages between 6 and 16,000 - suppose different mileages might be do with how the box has been treated and how slick your changes are? Aprilia has recognised this and has upgraded the gears with new specs and different part numbers (dealer supply also seems to be very poor with several months waiting time for parts). Not as bad as it could be with the V4 having a cassette type gearbox but still expensive and time consuming, especially if the bike is out of warranty.
I had provisionally booked to look at a 2012 V4 with a view to purchase but this is putting me off, especially with having had the bullet-proof reliability of the 14.
Has anyone on here with the V4 had this or any other problems?
Thanks, Russ

My opinion: Google ANY bike (or car, or helicopter..) and you'll find mechanical issues..

Without exception

What he said.

Forums are a great place for info, banter, items for sale etc, but people always put their problems on there too.

There isn't a vehicle on the road that is 100% fault free. True , your jap 4 forums will not have as many people on there with issues, but there will defiantly be some.
I ran the Tuono V2 , I did the research on reliability before I bought it , and to be fair I was apprehensive , but the bike never put a foot wrong whilst I owned it. I loved every minute of riding it and would still have it if I wasn't so fat. :yes
Don't tie your self in knots worrying about buying it..... Fook it... Life is too short, go and buy it, ride it, enjoy it, and worry about mending it if it fooks up..... Which it probably won't. :dunno
