The light is just for the rider to set to signal their preferred shift revs on a track where they might not be able to see the rev counter. It has no connection to the engine etc and you can ignore it and rev on to the red line which has a hard limiter controlled by the ecu. it's adjustable from 6k revs upwards but when the batt is disconnected it defaults back to 6k.
if you want to adjust the shift light on a pre 04 bike > key on, engine off press and release "C" needle will move to 6000. push and hold "C" within 3 seconds (before needle returns to 0) and it will rise (quickly). Release when you get close to the desired rpm, and then press again to bump it by 100rpm increments with each press. If you go too high, max it out, and it will start over. You don't have to push anything to store it, wherever you leave it when you stop pushing "C" is where it will be set.
