Guy's,

Can anyone help, any ideas? Whilst out on my bike (2001 Mille RSV - 12,000 mls) yesterday morning, first ride of the year after a good winter service/ overhaul, it simply cut out, dead. I was just simply cruising along, high gear, few rev's and then the engines dies, all electrics and ignition fine. Managed to coast into a lay by and there I sat (for six hours buts that's another story, I love the AA me!). When turning the ignition back on there was not the usual whir of the fuel pump. All relays, fuses appear to be fine but no noise from the fuel pump. Finally got it back into my garage last night (after six hours stuck in a lay by in the middle of nowhere!), tried the ignition and still no whir from the fuel pump. Came to it this morning turns on the ignition, fuel pump whir's and the bike starts like there is no problem!

Thoughts, comments, gratefully received. I would ask the wife as she seems to know or have an opinion about literally everything under the sun! But even she is stumped.

Cheers

could be an intermittantly faulty fuel pump relay, have you checked that the tilt sensor near the battery isn't loose and bouncing around - that would certainly cause your probs.

Deacs :thumbup

ps. tell your wife if she wants to be a know-it-all she needs to improve her game :biggrin

Possible Faulty Sidestand switch?????

mine had same problem a while back it was a faulty tilt sensor .....i changed fuel pump relay aswell while i was at it ,it hasnt skipped a beat since .......side stand switch u should check aswell i done the mod on it too

Fellow rsv forum people what kimbo has failed to mention is that we set out at 830 in sun got 10 minutes into the ride and hit the thickest fog / mist ever seen we were freezing even kimbo (who had purchased his first fully vented 1 piece) so we went for breakfast and the sun started to break through. We thought things can only get better.... Sadly not for kimbo!
Kimbo had order some more toast just before leaving as he was feeling greedy, this proved to be a very good idea as 5 mins after leaving the cafe kimbo was sitting at the side of the road. Never mind buddy it was an awesome ride and we will be out again soon

Check the electrical connector that supplies the fuel pump............the connectors wear with age and can vibrate loose.

I've had the same problem with my Y2K RSV-R on a nuber of occasions. I have the connector secured with a cable tie to stop it happening again.

Mine cut out yesterday for the second time in a few days, turns out that the tilt sensor had fallen off it's mount, lucky i had an allen key on me to remove the seat, sorted in 2 minutes flat. did the sidestand switch mod when i got home too, just to be safe.

You should do this -

Seconds instead of minutes to lift tank

Pretty sure I fixed the same problem you have

My 2002 rsv Mille done exactly the same in every way as yours, after checking all connections etc I thought a faulty fuel pump so opened the tank up cleaned and checked, in total it probably took me 8hrs problem solving and still the fuel pump would not respond properly, While the seat was up and ignition turned on I simply placed my finger on one of the 30amp fuses in the holder and straight away I heard a relay click and the fuel pump start? Had a look and underneath the fuse it was gunked up with grease or something and wasn't very tight, so cleaned up retightend and it has been perfect ever since, I'm so sure this will be the problem, let me know how you get on

check the side stand wiring at the stand as it frays as the the rubber splits at the join to the switch

I know this is an old thread but wanted to add one more possible solution. This just happened to me. Out of the blue. 2007 RSV. It was intermittent at first, but in the course of just a few miles turned into total shut down. Fortunately I ended about 6 blocks from my house and pushed her home. I checked everything ... and in the end, as stupid as it sounds, it was loose battery terminal connections. They were touching and looked OK, but when I inspected them they were loose. Not a SOLID connection... so I tightened them up and presto. Started right up and working like a champ! Phew! Hope this helps someone in the future from hours of frustration

I had the same problem a year ago. Turns out it was an intermittent fuel pump problem. When it starts or doesn't try tapping the pump GENTLY to see if it cuts out or kicks in. I sent away for a pump from a breakers and never had a problem since. If it doesn't prime it's not working.
