Hello from California with a troubled Aprilia Sportcity 250

I just wanted to say hi from smoky northern Cali with a major fire 5 miles from me. Its been crazy here all summer with the drought and all the fires. Anyway I have an Aprilia Sportcity 250 that I have been going through to get it to run. I got this from my son who was the original owner, has very low miles and was serviced before he put it away and didn't ride it for a year. I changed out the fuel, added a new battery and found that it wouldn't even turn over. It has a trouble light showing on the dash..... a triangular red light with an exclamation mark. He told me that before he put it away, the light would come on intermittingly and it would run rough. So now I was able to bypass the starter relay and run the starter with the key turned on, there is no spark at the sparkplug. I checked the continuity of the coil and it is good. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.
