Hello all i new to this forum and need some advice,
Ive been biking for a good few years now and have always had jap bikes but ive allways wanted a nice v twin and a good friend offered me his rsv-r 2001 model for a good price so i couldnt say no.
he never had a problam with it, but since then the first time starting the bike on my own is a nightmear,
yesterday when i got in from work i put the choke on and started without any throttle, but turned the choke of to early and it died, i tryed to restart it and it soon flodded, i tryed later last nite and flodded just before the battery went flat
i put new plugs in charged the battery full and again it wont start and its flodded
why doesnt it work, am i just beaing a nuggot and foggeting something ?
if it dont work soon ill just have to sell it as theres no point having a bike if it doesnt work
my mate is currantly away so cant really help me, he has said clean the plugs, no choke and full throttel
ive no idea
any help please
micheal

Just do a search mate , theres plenty of threads about starting issues . Dont give up on it yet .

hi yes ive tryed a few of them, i just need someone who knows what there doing to show me a good relaible way of start the dam thing, ive just ordered a new battery so hopefully that may help a little
cheers

Your mate is right , like you this is my first twin and had to get used to its quirks pretty quick . Do like he said no fast idle and full throttle to get the bike going as the bike easily floods if you dont catch it but dont use this method a lot . A good battery is a must , had a new one fitted on mine . You will find as the temps get higher the easier the bike starts and you dont need full fast idle , but not all bikes are the same , give it a go at least you will be happy it started .

Don't forget there is no choke on these bikes, the lever is for fast idle. By pulling back the lever you are in effect opening the throttle so if your bike floods easily from cold try using less fast idle.

thanks for the help, its just all new to me and im worried about damaging the sprag clutch as my old man had that happen,
ill try again tmarrow and jump the bike of the car battery and see if thats any better
cheers lads

charged the battery over night and three quator choke and bang, its alive
its allways the battery with the vtwins
cheers chaps

hello again all, i got my new battery today even tho its only a ctx12bs and it didnt like it it started then spluttered and didnt want to restart, so i may be placing my little rsvr up for sale shortly as i need a reliable bike for work

I too used to have starting problems with the standard battery but since I fitted the YTX14 & a new relay about 4 years ago it has always started first *** of the button I Never use any throttle just 3/4 choke and it always starts easy. I have found if you touch the throttle it floods almost straight away & you got no hope.

which starter motor relay do you use, were would i be able to find one ? many thanks

The standard YTX12-BS battery on these bikes is not really up to the job due to the high cranking amps needed to turn over the Rotax V-twin engine, more so in the cold winter months. The battery needs upgrading to a YTZ14S-BS or at least a YTX14-BS. Don't scrimp on cheap batteries either, go for a Varta funstart or Yuasa battery. You also ideally need to invest in a battery conditoner to keep the battery in tip top condition and keep it plugged in when the bike is not being used. A CTEC XS3600 is ideal

The starter solenoid will be past it's best by now. Contact Griff aka Fusebox at Aprilia Performance who can supply an uprated 150 amp Aprilia one.

This should now cure your starting woes

Hello all thanks for your advice and help but it's now back up for sale only owning it for just over 2 weeks, I'm gonna have to find another in line 4, so any reasonable offers considered , alltho it owes me a good amount of money, it's a 2001 Rsvr full mot and tax loads of history and paperwork

listen all u need is a starter solenoid. Search on ebay for 150 amp solenoid, there is a company that sells them for about £28. Had same problem with mine untill i fitted the 12volt 150 amp solenoid.
Im in beds also..luton, so if your near i can come take a look if you like? they are top bikes so dont give up so soon geeza

Hey motox , You been given loads of advice but can understand how frustrated you get . Only this morning mine would not start but had not run for 4 days so ended up with the booster on it and using the method mentioned before to get it going . Had a look at powerfreaks link and luckily the shops down the road . I've a yausa 14 on so its not always down to the battery
going for the uprated solenoid so if you hang on I will let you know the results , then you can decide to get rid or not. Once the weather turns and your out on it , you will be glad you kept it . You gotta think that , it is has character and thats partly why you buy one .
