I picked up a pair of carbon top fairing wind deflectors from a forum member here, all intact but the finish is shabby. So I grabbed a couple of large A4 sized sheets of that 3M carbon decal sheet, the stuff that actually looks decent and has a textured carbon finish on it, from a seller on eBay.

The idea was to use them on the carbon "ears" and make them look better. But I'm a bit unsure on how to go about it?. Do you cut the carbon sheet to size and outline of the ears but leave say an inch extra overlap all round then use a hairdrier to manipulate the sheet so it folds over the edges without any huge bumps etc?.

Has anyone use this stuff + heat on anything on their bike?. There are a few vids on how to do it on Youtube but I wanted to check with you fellas first to see if anyone has first hand tips of doing to their Mille. :thumbup

Yeah! I've used it. Pretty much as you said but stretch it under the heat otherwise you will end up with bubbles. (Not Michael Jackson's mate!) Have o say it doesn't look as goos as the real thing. Ended up taking it back off after a couple of weeks.

Cheers, any tips or particular technique when using the heat and stretching the stuff?. The condition of the carbon deflectors themselves is beyond wet and dry rubbing down and re-laquering so apart from painting them, the adhesive carbon sheet is my only option. I purposely bought the best quality stuff I could find and it looks very good to me, obviously not anywhere near as the real deal finish wise but it'll suffice. :thumbup

i know i can get your carbon ears back to a good finish i know someone who is fantastic with carbon well you have seen mine

You still need to rub the deflectors down in order to ensure a smooth or smoothish surface, Once stretched it will show blemishes. The dont'ts:

Don't over heat by having gun too close, it stretches with mildish heat.

Don't accidentally stick sticky surface to sticky surface - you will never seperate them.

Don't trim back edges immediately. can shrink back as it cools, leaving exposed edges if cut back too near edges.

Cheers guys.

Lee - Any idea of cost involved?. I'll maybe take a pic of the current condition of the ears. I'd be amazed if the right hand side one could be restored tbh!!!.

phb2417 - Ta, great tips, I'll follow your advice!!.

Did this today following phb's tips and I'm quite chuffed with the result.

Granted, they look nothing like the original carbon but they turned out pretty well I reckon. Was quite fiddly to do, needed lots of heat and stretching but eventually they started to take shape and I'm pleased with the result.

Fitting these to my 2000 Gen 1 Mille as per the Garvey "Sticky". Requires drilling the top fairing for mounting holes, didn't have time to do that today but will try and get it done tomorrow. A bit nervous drilling my fairing but should be worth it in the end.
