Handling whats wrong?

Hello all, just been out for a quick ride on my 03 mille, only had bike about a month. As soon as I got out the bike didn`t feel right,it felt like I had a flat tyre.On the straights it was ok but on the twisty roads it felt horrible.Have checked tyre pressures and are both 32psi,the tyres are pirreli diablos but the rear has squared off in the centre from the last owner, presumably motorway miles.would this make the bike feel so unstable or could it be something else or just me on a new bike ?:dunno. What a sound though:inlove.

matey, its prolly a combo of worn tyres and pressures/headbearings out of alignment/badly balanced wheel at front.
My pressures for road ar 33F 36R any lower and its track and any higher makes thebike handle awfull (for me)

for sure the back tyre wont help

mine had odd tyres on when i bought it, and was transformed by a new set

years ago when i picked up my old blade it felt awfull with it's squared off rear tyre, sort of felt like it wanted to fall over if that makes sense

plenty of threads on tyre choice and pressures

that sounds low to me. Everyone has different tyre pressure preferences. I like 34f 39r for instance. Tyre makers recommend 36f 42R for road. You may want to take this as a starting point and modify it if it doesn't suit your riding style. Check you suspension as well. There are plenty of good videos on youtube on how to set it up.

Make sure no oil leaks on forks.

Get suspension sorted by someone who knows what they are doing as the "downside" of good suspension components is that it only takes a little bit of bad adjustment to make a massive ride difference and make the bike handle like a pig.

Sounds like tyres tho....

Apologies for hijacking this thread...

Mark,

Did you get your suspension set up at Southern Cross? If so, Did they set up static sag only or static sag + rider sag?

Cheers :thumbup

Sergi,

Southern Cross sorted out my suspension on the first my Milles as it was riding like a dog (I got "lost" in all the settings).

I just told them my weight and they set about it. Took abut 15 mins and the bike was a revelation after and I've never touched it since. Charged me bugger all as it was in for a service at the time. They did suggest I come back for a new stronger front spring set if I bottomed out the forks on braking but I never have (put the cable tie on the fork to check if i ever bottomed it out). I guess that means the rider sag was not checked out however they probably can assess it by looking at you. lol

Another Mille I took in (I was more or less happy with the suspension as it came) they have suggested I uprate the springs rear and front (10 weight front)

(I weigh 15 stone before dressing).

I think I will fiddle around with my settings and/if/probably the bike handles like a pig, I will take it to them. I'm also a regular from SC and they have set up my bike in the past but only static sag. Cheer for the info.

Just return to the default suspension settings(they are in the manual) and work from there.

Hi Jeff,my first test ride on my bike was both a revelation and a dissapointment, knew straight away that the worn Pirreli`s were the cause of the downside,so bought the bike with price adjusted for new boots.
Put a pair of new Bridgestone 016`s on and problem solved. I`m running the recommended 36F / 42R,best handling bike I`ve ever had,you can play with the suspension after,

fit two new tyres, run at the handbook pressure, works everytime, everyone thinks the bikes knackered when its almost always squared off rubber..i guarantee it..

standard is 32 36

Interesting, so many are standard 36/42 these days (inc Falco and from memory the Tuono, I know Bridgestone recommend 36/42 for the Falco.) 42 is really pillion territory, its a bit severe one up. ;)

I heard that there was an unofficial agreement to try and standardise 36/42 since research showed that something like 80% of bikes were riding around with a lot less. Obviously people go lower at the track since the tyres get nice and hot but that is seldom the case on the road, specially in this weather ;)

I agree mate. I run 30psi on a trackday and on the first session as I roll out the pits it feels awful, like running on a flat.

On the road I used to run 36front 42 rear but now I run 36 all round and that feels better for me. It is very much down to rider prefference.

You definately need a higher pressure for the road and if your tyre is squared off then new hoop well will transform the bikes agility

Yeah these bikes dont like 36 42 IMO
i run 33 36 single rider on road, any higher feels horrible to m
