Handguards

Well, as promised everybody, here are the handguards on my T.

Before I get both barrells, lets just run through a few things:-

WHY?

- 'Cos heated grips don't prevent my digits from freezing - they only heat the palms of my hand. I needed something to prevent wind chill. And bar muffs - nah.

DO THEY WORK?
Well I went out for a trial blast today, 1c (34f) on country roads and motorway and yes, the loss of the wind chill factor helps - After 30mins I wasn't praying to get off and warm my fingers up. Sure, my fingers were cold, but nothing like before.

DID THEY AFFECT THE BIKE'S HANDLING?
There have been reports of 'weave' induced by handguards on other bikes. On the T, at speeds up to 95mph, she was rock steady.

HOW MUCH?
This is the difficult part. I couldn't find any Tuono specific in the UK, my local dealer looked at other Aprilia's in the range and none fitted. So I ended up importing from AF1 Racing in the US:- $199.99, postage $50, Import Tax £24ish, Parcelforce handling fee £13.50 Total around £195

Yeah, v. expensive I know, but they match the bike and you get what you pay for.

Looked at Acerbis, but thought they just wouldn't look right.

So there you go. You might think they look awful etc etc but they're only on for winter -and if they do the job for my commute, then who cares?

One final point, on parking up I noticed they were covered in fine road salt - salt that would otherwise have been in the levers etc. Gritters are out early this year:mad:

Here are some pics, tin hat on.

Those of you with an eye for detail will note the leaking front right forkseal - warranty job tomorrow. Mileage 6k, April 2009 bike.

They look **** but if they do the job thats all that matters mate. At least your out on your T ripping about :)

They look pretty good to me.

But if you want warm hands, buy some heated gloves.

Best invention ever for winter riding!

Got off lightly so far, I reckon!!

Thats a very long driveway............ posh bugger lol

Ha ha! :p No, saw this long drive to a mansion, did a 180, parked up and saw no-one about, so gets camera out. The automatic gates opened up, which was a pleasant surprise. :D

Nob, there are different types of ****. Dog is nasty, cow is pretty bad, horse is OK. So on the ****-o-meter, I'd say horse :D

I think they look fine especially using them just for cold weather riding

Price is too steep for me although a mate of mine is going over the pond in a couple of weeks so I would like find out what he can get them for over there.
Do you have a part number or reference?

thats what i ve been looking at i ve got heated grips as the bike came with them, old man syndrome nahhhhhhhhhhhh nooooooooooooo wayeeeeeeeeeee try a set and yr see why:)
any way those hand guards look the nuts and so they should for 195 quid but otta my price range though,
i am gonna look at a dorsaduro as i am sure they have them and see if there go on my t:)

Same ones then. 856855 is the throttle side and 856856 is clutch side.

They look pretty nice now :)

They look a bit like a ships sails....could be useful for an extra 3mph when you've got the 'wind behind you...'

I think they look really good, if they just keep that windchill off to give you an extra few weeks or months riding then it can only be a good thing !

Can I just confirm what you're saying .... The £200 hand guards from AF1 are exactly the same parts as the £42 Dorsoduro ones ?
What else do you get in the kit from AF1 ?

You're right TubbyT. I was having a chat with my Aprilia dealer (whilst bike's in for new fork seals) and he reckons all in about £70. The only extra bits in the kit that AF1 supplied, apart from screws etc, are Dorsoduro bar ends and a couple of brackets to make them fit to the T; the brackets are about 2"long with a hole each end for fixing one end to handguard, the other to the mirror bottom assembly.

If you can get hold of those brackets you're quids in.
In the meantime, AF1 are doing pretty well out of it.

-5c on the ride home from work earlier and they made a huge difference in that temp.

Blimey lads - I'm pleasantly surprised; I thought I was in for a right bollocking! :D

Must have something to do with our age!!
