Gen1 vs Gen2 vs Factory etc

HI,

I'm not sure if there's already a thread regarding this, I have searched but canna find one. Without starting a riot on what is the best/fastest etc I'm looking for some comments.

If I was looking for medium priced model of either of those mentioned in the title, what would be the best option. Taking that they are all in very good nick with average miles etc and standard. For example:

  • Gen1 3000-3500 quid mark (might add nice shock etc at later date)
  • Gen2 4000-5000 quid mark (might add nice shock etc at later date)
  • Factory 5500 + quid mark (already has the nice stuff)

I suppose my question is this:
Is there a big difference between the models in the terms of standard handling etc? If I fit a better shock etc to a Gen1&2 will handle the same as a Factory? Is it worth saving a wee bit more and getting a Factory in the first place etc etc?

To be honest I'm not the fastest of riders hence the "slomo" tag, but I do like a decent handling bike. Will the G1 & G2 do this no problem?

I don't think there is a lot of difference at all on the road. Peeps on here slag off standard shock on gen2s in particular but unless you are a bit of a loon doubt an average rider would notice.

They are all good handling bikes :thumbup

ive had cbrs, gsxrs, yzfs, zxrs etc etc, and my gen 1 on standard suspension
handles better than all of them, only bike ive ever owned that I dont feel the need
to **** about with the settings, only complaint would be its a bit wibbly wobbly at really
high speeds but I quite like that (my favourite bike ever was a tl1000s)

try a gen 1 first if you can and if you like it you've saved a packet.

unless your loaded then **** it and buy the gen 2 factory

The Fcatory wont especially handle any different but it does feel a lot more plush and rides the bumps far better.

Buy an R then spend loads on making it Factory spec ???
Ask anyone, they all want the Ohlins Sussies, = £1000+ bike price.
Or just get the Factory if its in your budget.
Garry just swapped from sorted R to a Factory, ask him.
I've had 5 Prillas with various bits and pieces on and nothing feels as planted and sorted as me Factory.
Factory's are dearer to buy but they sell for more.
No fuggin brainer really.
Had a nice little rip in the rain today, can ya tell :thumbup

okey dokey slomo..

as nobs says, just got shut of me tuoldo, fer a gen2 factory... to be fair, i was a lil dissapointed in the 1st few weeks, i expected a MASSIVE difference, but it wasnt there...

But... as i got used to it, it was a chalk and cheese moment.. the tuoldo was my comfy old slipper, i knew what it could do, i knew when i started caning it through twists the suspension started to give up a little as it got hotter, but this i enjoyed, i liked the way it got tired as i did..

The Gen2 - **** me its different, i didnt expect that.. its no where near as grunty as the owd motor, but let it rev.......... and by **** does it let you know, totally different engine in my opinion.
The upgraded suspension ? well worth it, it dont get tired, at first i,m thinking, this is ****, very hard, not comfy at all, but give it some work to do, then it really comes into its own... thinking back the things i got up to on the owd un, i wonder how i ever stayed on the road..... but aint that what makes it fun ?

I sold me owd un fer just over 3k, paid another 2.5k to upgrade to what i,ve got.
Do i think its worth it?

YES MATE.. totally different..

Interesting comments and thanks for the input. I've noted that there's twa T on here that's interested me. One G1 fae Jockland with funcy shock and forks (re Rico's post) and a lovely standard G2 in blue and white. I'm really interested in the G1 as it's closer to mi and it's got that "sorted" look aboot it. ould this now handle like a Factory.

Garry,
Thanks for the detailed reply. Are you saying that the G1 or G2 has a grunter motor in the lower/mid revs than a factory, but the factory takes off as the revs get higher?

BTW. I really like the Factory looks even though it's not to everyones taste, but I don't want to push to a Factory if any of the other two would do me just as well.

The older engines are like a big lazy dog that don't need any effort to rip your head off. The new ones are a bit more like a lion walking round its pen growling, just ready pounce. Wind it up and thats it, no stoppin it.
I've said it before on here that the new ones need revving almost like a 2 stroke, got a work em. Test both sorts out, theirs tonnes of Tuoldo's and Tunewno's around atm.

Nob, that's interesting. It might be that a G1 would be better then. A nice grunty motor, or are the G2 the same.

As you might have reailised I don't have a T yet, but it is high on my list. I have driven one although not for very far. I've decided that this year is the year to go for a decent bike and just want to get the low down before I take the plunge so to speak.

Their both grunty and get better with age, They just do it a bit different. I'd rather have a late Racing or Factory Tuoldo than an early new shape meself. The Tuoldo Racings are drop dead gorgeous but expensive. Check the Tuoldo Factories out.

Okay so am I correct in thinking this:
G1 = Tuono (fighter) standard
G1 = Tuono Racing is the G1 version of the new Factory?
G2 = Tuono (R) is now the standard
G2 = Tuono Factory, is the G2 version of the G1 Racing?

Something like that. The tuono racing is really nice to ride a well fella. Smoothe a silk. I tried looking for one on autotrader to find out the price but couldn't find any on there. When I bought mine there were 4 for sale so they're pretty rare. I couldn't see me changing mine for a while as it's such a good bike. I've only had 3 though. An 07 plate gsxr 1000 a 56 plate BMW and this one. This ones the best

Not quite.
Tuono Family Tree is like this
2002 Tuono R model. limited edtion, Ohlins, Oz and Carbon. brown/gold colours 125bhp V990 Magnesium Rotax engine
2003 Tuono Fighter. Red/gold, grey/gold sachs/showa, Brembo wheels.
2003 Tuono Racing. Black/red/yellow Ohlins, White Oz wheels. Carbon bodywork close ratio gearbox
2004 Tuono R model. Black/red, Fluoro red/black, or Silver/Red. Sachs/showa & brembos
2004 Tuono Factory. Black/red/white. ohins, blue Oz wheels. Carbon Bodywork
2005 as 2004
2006 Tuono R (gen 2) red, black or silver. Sachs/Showa, blue cast wheels 133bhp
2007 Tuono Factory - Red Lion paint, Ohlins, blue Oz wheels 139bhp "Evo" engine. Dung coloured frame
2007 Tuono R blue/white, black/silver red/black sachs/showa, blue wheels
2008 - R model colours change, Factory gets gold frame/wheels
2009 - Factory "Black Dream" colours.

Engine wise the older unit feels like it produces more power lower, then takes off like a scalded cat at 6k. This is mostly due to the 2-1 exhaust system
The Gen 2 has a 2-2 exhaust that lets the engine rev more freely and bigger inlet valves & throttle bodies, upping peak power. The difference between the 133 & 139bhp engines is almost impossible to tell

To ride the early bikes feel taller, you sit ON a Tuoldo, and IN a Tunuo.
Whichever you like the look of, go for the Factory/Racing version. The cost difference is nothing like the cost of upgrading an R model to the higher spec, it's basically a no brainer IMHO like Nob said.

The Factory handles way better than an R model - we have both in the garage, and I spent 3 years and a small fortune upgrading a Tuoldo R to Factory spec. The Gen 2 R model handles a lot better than a naked Jap I4, but the rear shock is a cheap piece of *****, and it will benefit from a decent quality replacement unit, Ohlins, Manxton, Penske etc.

Depends what you've done to it. They make about 115 at the back wheel usually, dump the stock exhaust for a race can, fit a better airbox, all adds a bit more.

The best Tuoldo's with 2+2 pipes make about 125 at the rear wheel.

The injection mapping is basically the same as on the RSV 1000 R 2003, with a couple of modifications to make it even more suitable for the Tuono Racing. But then, 130 horsepower at 9,500 RPM and a maximum torque of 101 Nm at 7,250 RPM speak clearly enough.

Says 130 on that write up Batfastard

Like Nob says, you can believe what you want - but a Racing has EXACTLY the same engine as the other Tuoldo's. In standard trim they put out between 112 and 115 bhp at the back wheel. Some Dyno's vary a bit, but most are within a couple of percent of each other.

My Tuoldo showed 122 hp on the dyno with the Evoluzione airbox, Akra 2+2 pipes and a custom map on the PCIII. My mate Mel has a Racing and with the Ape race can and chip on his we could chase each other around Cadwell all day. Performance was identical.

I think the "official" figure is 126 bhp. But that's at the crank, not the rear wheel.
