I've got a 2000 mille and the standard gearing 17/42 is crap, if your's is running this then change it immediately. Drop the front to 16, the difference is monumental mate. If you like that then change the rear to a 44, this drops the top end to 160 but the acceleration is great and it will smooth it out at low speeds round town etc.
As badger says make sure the front sprocket is round the right way as the tossers at the last aprilia dealers I went to put my 16tooth front on the wrong way round and the chain was catching on the side wall of my rear tyre..
