hi chaps wanted to ask the experts i have an rsvr 03 old shape was looking to change to either 15 tooth or 16 tooth on front what would you recommend and how much would this effect the top end speed by doing this want to keep the original 42 tooth on the back thanks for any advice.

HI KIRKY :biggrin. I'M RUNNING WITH A 15 T SPROCKET ON THE FRONT AND WOULD DEFFINATELY RECOMEND IT. :thumbup :thumbup THO I'M NOT SURE OF THE LOSS ON SPEEDO ACCURACY & TOP END DIFFERENCE FROM STANDARD.:whocares

Speedo will be fine (it's runs off the back disc studs) and top end shouldn't be much affected - not unless you're taking it to Bonneville Salt Flats anyway!

THERE YOU GO. :thumbup THANKS 303 YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY ON HERE:biggrin

ironically a small drop in gearing actually increases the top speed because it generally won't rev out to max in top unless you have wind or a slope to help.

I have run 15/42 and currently 15/41 on my 2004 bike and the top speed was much the same. I purely dropped back to 41 on the rear because motorway stints when touring meant sitting at slightly too high revs for decent tank mileage and numb fingers.

On pre 2004 bikes 16/42 16/44 seems popular.

I've just put a 15 tooth sprocket on the front and left rear standard ( I'm a lazy git) and whilst it hasn't set the world on fire, the bike picks up faster, I'm not thrashing through the gears like I did on my (RIP) RSVR which had both sprockets done, the wonderful engine braking works better (for me) and crawling around town is more comfortable...best £18 I've spent.

I too run 15/42 and have to say it transformed my bike from a shuddering piece of unridable **** round town to a dream machine.

Best £10 ever spent on my bike.

front sprocket

thanks guys for your advice and look as if i will go with 15/42 as most off you seem to have this combination, wheelies here i come.

15/42 will allow you to keep the std. 108 link chain...16/44 i run on my 02 and use 110 link chain..even tho 108 will just make it. Either gearset ratio will make your Ape a new beast..screw the top end, you lose bugger all anyway, and as Spoonz says, it'll pull redline in top :thumbup...but the best is see how it gets up and goes out of the corners, it will leave you with a grin like a cheshire cat for sure. :pirate

I also have a 2003 old shape, and wanted to go down on the front sproket,

i was gonna only go down 1 on the front to a 16 as i did not want to change my chain.

but am i right in reading the above posts...a 15 front and the standard 42 rear will be ok on the orignal chain?

Mate, however much you love your Mille, I wouldn't do that as those sprockets can be rather sharp. I'd stick with the exhaust if I were you (but only when it's cold!)

Mickeyboy yes, you can keep your standard 108 link chain with a 15 tooth front and 42 tooth rear sprockets

:lol:lol:lol NICE ONE :lol:lol:lol

I have had my 04 RSV for three weeks and have just found out what i am running 16/40 with 106 links, Sounds odd what sort of gearing is this?? Does anyone think it has been done like this for the Wheelies?or Top end....

Nz, as yours is the later newer shape RSVR, standard gearing on these bikes is 16/40 with 106 link chain which yours apeears to be. This post is about gearing on the older model 1998 to 2003 bikes. The best gearing for your bike is 15/42 and you can keep the standard length chain too. Hope that helps
